Creating a Square-Butt Weld

You can create a square-butt weld by using Square-Butt Weld and a square profile. A square-butt weld needs preparations on the parts to be welded. Geometrically speaking, it is a seam engraved in the parts to be welded with a top surface confused with the surfaces of its supports.

  1. Select the supports, that is, the top faces of the parts to be welded.

  2. Select the bottom face of a part.

    The thickness of the part is determined by the selection of the bottom face of one of the parts. This thickness then determines the vertical edge of the rectangle. In case of two parts with distinct thickness, the smaller of the two thicknesses is taken into account to compute the height of the weld.

  3. Optional: To trim the geometry, select the limits.
  4. Enter a width value.
  5. Optional: To extend the weld, enter an extrapolation length.
  6. Optional: Select Generate Weld Impacts.
    The app performs a Boolean subtract of the weld shape from the plates being welded.
  7. Optional: To specify a dashed weld, click the Type tab and select a creation mode.
  8. Optional: To define the shape of the weld, click the Manufacturing tab and select an option. The shape defines the weld seam shape representation in drafting context. If you select Convex or Concave , specify a curvature value in Offset.
  9. Optional: To let the Drafting app retrieve the sides on which the weld is created, select an option:

    Double Specifies a weld created on both sides.
    The corresponding symbol is extracted and displayed on the drawings.

Example of a Continuous Square-butt Weld

  • An assembly protected weld preparation is created and appears under the Assembly features node.
  • The welded 3D shapes are prepared.
    Important: In the tree, the weld impact appears as a feature in the PartBody including impacted 3D shapes. A rep impact is created, maintaining a link between the root product under which the bundle of weld, weld body, and welds are created. Rep impact appears under Impacts manager .
