Structured Content in Edit Mode

Edit tools for structured content let you update specific rows, or many rows at once. Not all structured content pages include all of the edit tools.

If a column lists an attribute that allows multiple values, that column cannot be edited. You can use a form page, usually a Properties page, to enter or edit values for multivalue attributes.

To access this page:

  1. View any structured content.
  2. Click Edit All in the page Actions menu or toolbar. The cells you can edit show gray triangles.

The app color codes your edits to indicate the changes you plan to make. These symbols and markups indicate the proposed change:

  • and red strikethrough text. Row is marked to be removed (removed from the parent object, not deleted from the database).
  • and green text. Row is marked to be added.
  • . One or more cells in the row have edits.
  • Red strikethrough text in cell. Cell content edited, new value shows in black text
  • Blue rows. The row is selected. Yellow column header. A cell in that column is being edited.

After you make changes, you cannot expand or collapse the structure until you save those changes. You can make any number of changes to any number of cells prior to saving them.

Some structure content pages let you save edits as a markup to retrieve the edits later. Click for the page for details on how markups work on that page.

When editing percentages, the percent sign does not appear when you edit this data.

  • Tab and right arrow keys move to the next cell.
  • Shift + Tab and left arrow keys move to the previous cell.
  • Up arrow moves to the cell above the current cell.

To use the arrow keys within a cell, click in the cell and then the arrow keys move among the characters in the cell.

Update a single table cell
  1. Click in the cell.

An edit box or list of choices opens over the selected cell.

  2. Type or select the new value.
  3. Press Tab, or click in another cell.
The change shows in bold italics with the prior value redlined in the cells, and the row is marked with .
Update multiple cells
  1. Select the objects you want to update.
  2. Select the column you want to update from the Mass Update list (beneath the page toolbar). The page opens an edit box, a drop-down list, a check box, or an ellipsis button to search for the needed value.
  3. Enter a value for that column.
  4. Click:
    • Apply to Selected. Only updates those objects that are selected. Only rows that are visible AND selected are updated. Any collapsed rows, even if the parent node is selected, will not be updated.
    • Apply to All. Updates all objects on the page whether or not checked.
All changed cells show the new value in bold italics and the row is marked with .
Drag-and-drop items within the structure You can drag-and-drop items to another item to make the dragged item a child of the dropped-on item. You can drag-and-drop in detail, thumbnail, or graph view.

An icon on the page toolbar toggles between settings that determine what happens when you drop the item.

Icon Description
Copy Adds a relationship between the item and the new parent removing the existing parent-child relationship. The item shows as a child of both parent items.
Move Removes the existing parent-child relationship, and adds a new parent-child relationship between the dragged item and the item where you drop it. The item shows as a child of its new parent.

Theapp shows an icon as you drag the selected items. The icon shows an arrow (if is active) or a + (if is active), and the number of items being dragged. You can drop the items when the target turns green. If the target turns red, you cannot drop those items on that target.

Add an existing object to the structure For a page designed to show a list of objects that do not expand, you can add multiple new rows at a time. For a page designed for multiple root nodes (that is, expandable lists with multiple objects at the "top" level), you can add new rows one at a time.
  1. If you want the object to be a child of a row, select that row. Do not select more than one row.
  2. Click one of these items:
    • Where the page inserts the row depends on the type of list:
      • For a flat list of objects (not a tree page), the new row is inserted at the top of the page.
      • For a single root page (one expandable item at the top, called the parent), the new row is added as the first child of the parent
      • For a multiple root page (a series of objects that can be expanded), the new row is added as a root node at the top of the list
    • >Insert Above
    • >Insert Below

The page adds a blank row marked with .

  3. In the blank row, enter search criteria for the needed item.
  4. Click Lookup Entries.
  5. For all rows that the criteria resolves to a single item, that item is added. For rows that did not resolve to a single item, shows for that line. Hover the cursor over the symbol to view the exact error. You cannot save edits until all added rows have been resolved to a single item.

The most common errors will be "No object found" and "Multiple objects found". Edit the values for any error rows, or add additional criteria, then click Lookup Entries again.

When the needed object has been found, it is marked with .

Some columns are not used as search criteria. The value you enter can be different from the existing value for that item, but is still a match based on the other values you entered. In this case, the cell shows as though you had edited the value.

If Lookup Entries shows instead of Save, the page did not find a unique matching object. Either remove that row, or find the object as explained above.

Create an item in the structure For a page designed to show a list of objects that do not expand, you can add multiple new rows at a time. For a page designed for multiple root nodes (that is, expandable lists with multiple objects at the "top" level), you can add new rows one at a time.
  1. If you want the new object to be a child of a row, select that row. If no rows are selected, the new row is inserted at the top of the page.

For Insert Above and Insert Below, you must select a row first. The new row is inserted either above or below the selected row, at the same structured level as the selected row (that is, not a child or parent).

If the object type is defined with default values for any columns, those default values are automatically added for you (you can edit them).

  3. In the blank row (marked with a ) just added, enter the content for the new object.
  4. To remove an inserted row that you do not want to keep, select the row and click > Remove. You cannot use this command to remove rows that you did not add using or .

If you created new objects but an error occurred, shows for that line and an error message displays explaining the problem. For example, an error occurs if an object already exists with the same name as the one you are trying to create.

Use the Actions menu

Action Name Description
Undo Reverts changes to existing values on the selected row. If you made changes to child objects of the selected row, those changes are also removed.
Cut Marks the selected rows for removal ( ) from its current location and keep in memory for use with one of the Paste commands. You can cut multiple rows at a time.
Copy Makes a copy of the selected rows and keep them in memory for use with one of the Paste commands. If you select copy again, the prior copied rows are cleared from memory.
Paste As Child Inserts rows cut or copied as children of the selected row. To define an order for child rows, use Paste Above or Paste Below.
Paste Above Inserts rows cut or copied above the selected row as child objects to the selected row's parent object. Pasted rows show in green if the row was cut or copied from a different parent object, or orange if the pasted rows were cut (not copied) from a different location in the list of that parent object. Orange indicates a resequencing of rows.
Paste Below Inserts rows cut or copied below the selected row as child objects to the selected row's parent object. Pasted rows show in green if the row was cut or copied from a different parent object, or orange if the pasted rows were cut (not copied) from a different location in the list of that parent object.

You cannot edit fields in a row that is marked for cutting, pasting, or deleting. You can edit fields for pasted rows.
