Finding Where a Part is Used

You can find in which parent assemblies a part is used.

When Manufacturing BOM Management is installed, an EBOM Substitute check box is included which when checked, shows all assemblies where the context part is used as a substitute.

For configured parts, an Effectivity filter is available. See Configured BOM User's Guide: About Configured BOM Filters.

  1. Do one of the following:

    • Right-click a part's name from any list of parts (such as the Search Results page) and click Where Used.
    • Click a part's name to open the part's page. Click the Engineering BOM category and then click the Where Used tab.

  2. Click to open the Refinements panel to select filter options.
    1. From the Levels list, select an option:

      Option Description
      All Shows all levels.
      Up to Specify the number of levels you want to view. The default is 1.
      Highest Shows only the highest level.
      Up to and Highest Shows the highest level parent from the level specified.

    2. Select the Revisions that you want included in the report. This is not applicable for Related filter options.

      Option Description
      Latest Shows only those assemblies that are the latest revision, regardless of their lifecycle state.
      Latest Released Shows only those assemblies that are the latest released revisions. This is the default.
      All Shows all the assemblies, regardless of their revision.

    3. Select the Related items that you want included in the report. The available options are: All, None, Products, Features, Builds, Product Configuration, Specifications. Selected objects are shown when you click + at the beginning of the row.
    4. If you want to further filter the list, enter a Reference Designator or Find Number.
    5. Check the EBOM Substitute check box to show all assemblies where the context part is used as a substitute. This is available only when Manufacturing BOM Management is installed.
    6. Select a Plant from the list to view the part's plant-specific attributes for that plant. Shown only when Manufacturing BOM Management is installed and the view is set to either EBOM Common or MBOM Plant-Specific. For details, see the Manufacturing BOM Management User's Guide.
    7. Click the next to Filter Expression to filter on an effectivity expression for a model. The Effectivity form opens, where you can select a model. See Configuration and Effectivity Services User's Guide: Editing an Effectivity Definition.
    8. Click the next to Predefined Configuration to display in the filter results all product configurations that are in either the In Work or Active states.

      The Predefined Configuration option is displayed only if Variant Management is installed.

    9. Click Filter to refresh the Where Used page.
    Column Description
    Levels Specifies the level of the part within the parent assembly. By default, the level number is preceded by a "-" sign, signifying levels back from the current level.
    On premises only: Your system may be configured otherwise. This is not applicable for specification options.
    End Node This column contains an icon for each item at the last level.
    F/N The find number is an ID that is used on drawings as “bubble” callouts. Find numbers must be unique at any given level in the BOM. They are usually integer values: 1, 2, 3… (not applicable for specifications)
    Parent Effectivity The actual effectivity value stored between EBOM relationships. Effectivity criteria you select are applied only to the current effectivity of parent components. Parent components with no effectivity are not listed in the Where Used page.
    Ref Des The Reference Designator ID is used on Printed Circuit Cards to indicate the location an electronic component is to be inserted. Reference Designators are usually values like R1, R2, R7 or C1, C5 (R for resistor and C for capacitor). (Not applicable for specifications.)
    Qty The quantity of the part used in the assembly.
    Part Mode Indicates whether the Part is a configured or unconfigured part.
    Change Required Indicates "Enabled; Any Change" if the part is under change management, otherwise, "Disabled". Under strict change management, the CA is shown.
    Related ECR The name of the ECR raised on this part. This is included as legacy information for ECRs created in a prior release.
    Revision The revision number or code.
    Type Shows the type of object related to the part. The possible types depend on the filtering options selected: part, CAD model, CAD drawing, or drawing print. If Variant Management is installed, the type could also be product, feature, build, or product configuration.
    State The current state of the object in its lifecycle.
    Description Details about the object.
    Relationship Specifies how the object is connected (for example: BOM, Alternate, Substitute, Spare, Part Specification).
  3. Use the Change Management menu to add parts to a new or existing change order or change request; or to use mass change to mass release or mass obsolete parts. See:

  4. If required, replace the current revision of the part with another revision. Select one or more parts from the Where Used list and choose from these commands in the Replace By menu:
    Command Description
    Replace by Latest Revision Replace the existing revision with the latest revision.
    Replace by Latest Released Revision Replace the existing revision with the latest Released revision.
    Replace by Selected Revision Replace the current revision with the selected revision.
