Carrying over Alternate Products to Another Product Revision

A parent product might have children that have alternate products assigned to them. If you revise the parent, you can carry over the alternate products to the children of the new revision. For example, if the parent product is a bicycle, one of the children might be a tire. If the tire has alternate products assigned to it, you can carry over the tire alternate products to another revision of the bicycle.

Notes:
  • All alternate products assigned as All Instances or Selected Instances under the parent are carried over. You cannot select which of these alternate products assigned to the children are carried over.
  • Alternate products assigned as All Usages are not carried over. You can open the other revision and add them as required.
  • Alternate products are carried over to the other revision in the Proposed state. If required, qualify the alternate products after you carry them over. For information, see Qualifying Alternate Products.
  • You can change the alternate products' usages after you carry them over.
  • You cannot carry over obsolete alternate products.
  • You can carry over alternate products of branched items and their revisions.

Before you begin:
  • The parent product from which you want to carry over alternate products must have one or more children that have a least one assigned alternate product.
  • The parent product revision to which you want to carry over the alternate products must have no alternates assigned to its children.
  • You can carry over only alternate products to which you have read-access.
  1. Open the parent product revision to which you want to carry over the alternate products.
  2. If the parent product revision to which you want to carry over the alternate products requires change management, select a change action to work under. For more information, see Work Under a Change Action.
  3. Click Information and select the Alternate tab.
  4. In the tab toolbar, select Alternates of Children.
  5. In the Carryover alternates from revision dialog box, click the number in the far-left column to select the parent product revision from which to carry over the alternate products.
  6. Click Add.
    A list of the alternate products that are carried appears.
    Note: If you carry over more than 50 alternate products, the process runs in the background and you must refresh the screen to view the results. Depending on your organization's server configuration, you might also receive an email notification when the process completes.
