Copying from Another Model Version

You can copy variability, allocate rules, and duplicate the product configurations from a source model version to a target model version, whether they belong to the same a model or not.

Note: The target model version is where you are copying variability, allocating rules, and duplicating product configurations to. You select the Copy From action in the target model version. The source model version is where you are copying variability, allocating rules, and duplicating product configurations from.

Before you begin: Open the target model version. For more information, see Opening a Model Version.
  1. In the model version's identity card, select Menu > Copy from.

Note: The Copy from command is not available if the target model version is in the Frozen, Released, or Obsolete lifecycle maturity state.

  2. In the Copy from existing Model Version dialog box, search for and select the source model version from which you want to copy the variability and rules allocation, and duplicate the product configurations.

    Notes:
    • After you select a source model version to copy from, you cannot change it during the copying process.
    • After you start the copying process, you cannot go back to previous selections.
    • After you copy anything to the target model version, you cannot go back to make different selections or revert the copy process.

  3. In the Select Variability field, clear the check boxes for the variants, variant values, option groups, and options that you do not want to copy from the source model version and allocate to the target model version.

Only the variants, variant values, option groups, and options that are not already in the target model version are listed.

Tip: Click Search to filter the list. For more information, see Filtering Listed Items by Title.

    • If you select only variants or option groups, they and all of their child variant values and options are copied to the target model version.
    • If you select only variant values or options, they and their parent variant or option group are copied to the target model version. Any sibling variant values and options that were not selected are not copied.
    • The Mandatory status of variants and the Sequence Number of variants and option groups that you selected are copied to the target model version.
  4. To indicate what you want to copy, click one of the following:
    OptionDescription
Copy and Close Immediately copies and allocates the selected variability to the target model version, then closes the dialog box.
Copy and Continue Immediately copies and allocates the selected variability to the target model version, then keeps the dialog box open so that you can copy rules and duplicate product configurations.
Continue If there is no selected variability to copy to the target model version, keeps the dialog box open so that you can copy rules and duplicate product configurations.
Cancel Closes the dialog box without copying or allocating anything to the target model version.

    Notes:
    • After you start the copying process, you cannot go back to previous selections.
    • After you copy anything to the target model version, you cannot go back to make different selections or revert the copy process.
    • If there is an error while copying, any variability that was already copied to the target version cannot be canceled or reverted.

  5. If you chose to continue, in the Select Rules field, clear the check boxes for the matrix rules and expression rules that you do not want to copy from the source model version to the target model version.

Tip: Click Search to filter the list. For more information, see Filtering Listed Items by Title.
    Notes:
    • If the source and target model versions belong to the same model, only the rules that are not already in the target model version are listed.
    • If the source and target model versions belong to different models, all the rules from the source model version are listed.
    • All of the rules from the source model version are listed if both of the following are true:
      • The source model version was used in a previous Copy From process and some of the rules were copied to the target model version.
      • You are repeating the Copy From process with the same source model version on the same target model version.

  6. To indicate what you want to copy, click one of the following:
    OptionDescription
Copy and Close Immediately copies and allocates the selected rules, but not any product configurations, to the target model version, then closes the dialog box.
Copy and Continue Immediately copies and allocates the selected rules to the target model version, then keeps the dialog box open so that you can duplicate product configurations.
Continue If there are no selected rules to copy to the target model version, keeps the dialog box open so that you can duplicate product configurations.
Cancel Closes the dialog box without copying any rules or product configurations to the target model version. Any selected variability was already copied to the target version and cannot be canceled or reverted.

Warning: If there is an error while copying:
    • Any rules that were already allocated to the target model version cannot be canceled or reverted.
    • Any variability that was already copied to the target version cannot be canceled or reverted.

  7. If you chose to continue, in the Select Product Configurations field, clear the check boxes for the product configurations that you do not want to copy from the source model version to the target model version.

All product configurations from the source model are listed.

Tip: Click Search to filter the list. For more information, see Filtering Listed Items by Title.

  8. To indicate what you want to copy, click one of the following:
    OptionDescription
Copy and Close Immediately duplicates the selected product configurations to the target model version, then closes the dialog box.
Cancel Closes the dialog box without duplicating any product configurations to the target model version. Any selected variability and rules were already copied to the target version and cannot be canceled.

Warning: If there is an error while copying:
    • Any variability that was already allocated to the target version cannot be canceled or reverted.
    • Any rules that were already copied to the target model version cannot be canceled or reverted.
    • Any product configurations that were already duplicated in the target model version cannot be canceled or reverted.

When duplicating product configurations from the source model version, the Rule Compliancy Status and Completeness Status properties are not copied. The properties are defined as Not Validated for Rule Compliancy Status and Unknown for Completeness Status in the duplicated product configurations in the target model version. This is because they are dependent on the rules and variability available in the target model version, and cannot be computed during the copy process. When you manually edit the product configuration in the target model version, these properties are computed and updated.

In the target model definition:

  • Any selected variability and rules are copied from the source model version to the target model version and allocated to it.
  • The Mandatory status of variants and the Sequence Number of selected variants and option groups are copied to the target model version.
  • Any selected product configurations are duplicated from the source model version, are created in the target model version, and are allocated to it.
