Creating Covering Panels

You can decompose a covering to create covering panels, using a sketch as a cutting element.

Before you begin: Create a covering. See Creating a Covering.

  1. Select the covering in the 3D area or in the tree.
  2. On the context toolbar, click Decompose Covering .

The Covering Panels dialog box appears.

  3. In the Layer box, select the layer of the covering to decompose.
  4. In the Depth box, select the number of layers to penetrate.

The layers above the selected layer are considered.

For example, if there are total three layers in the covering, and you select the second layer and the depth as 2, then the second and third layers will be considered for decomposition.
Note: If any of the selected layers are already decomposed, a warning message appears. If proceeded, the old decomposition of that panel is removed.
  5. Click to create a sketch to be used as a cutting element.
The created sketch appears in the Sketch box.
  6. If the covering is non-planar, select the mode:
    ModeDescription
Projection The sketch is directly projected on the covering to create panels.

Unfold The non-planar covering is unfolded to create a planar surface (unfold). The sketch is drawn on this planar surface. If it is not possible to create an unfold due to complex ceiling geometry, a warning message appears and the mode is changed to Projection.

The Unfold option is available only when your role contains the Generative Shape Develop app.

  7. Optional: In case of the resultant panels are curved, select the Flatten check box to flatten them.
The panels are flattened. The flattened panel is created tangent to the curved panel at the center.
  8. Click OK.
The covering panels are created. You can modify the gap between the panels by editing the Gap parameter in the tree.
  9. Optional: To remove the decomposition, select any of the covering panels and click Remove Decomposition of Covering on the context toolbar.

In the Remove Panels dialog box, you can select the Remove decomposition of the current layer only check box to remove the decomposition of the selected layer only.

  10. Optional: To edit the decomposition, select a covering panel and click Decompose Covering on the context toolbar.

    Notes:
    • All the decomposed layers that are cut by the common sketch are back to the edit mode.
    • The previously created sketch is displayed in the Sketch box. You can click to edit the sketch.
