Creating a Linear Pattern

You can create a linear pattern by selecting a master axis, a direction, and a number of axis instances.

Before you begin: The pattern command is used in the context of Bridge Design Assistant, Rebar Creation, Multiple Split, Capture Component Specifications and other commands.

  1. Select an axis as Master Axis.
  2. Optional: To create a 3D model automatically, import an Excel table into the 3DEXPERIENCE.

You can edit the group length and the internal axis with the help of the Robot. For more information, see Creating a Curvilinear Pattern.

  3. Select the pattern direction. By default, the Z component of the robot determines the direction of the pattern.
    • Manipulate the robot to change the Z-direction and hence the resulting pattern direction.
    • Select the global or local X, Y Z axis to specify the Z direction.
    • Optionally, select a line or a plane to specify the direction.
Note: The Robot command is replaced by the Remove command. When you remove the direction, the Robot icon reappears and the direction is reverted to the Z-component of the robot.
  4. To customize the pattern, manipulate the elements in the 3D area, choose the mode from the following, and adjust values accordingly.
    • Count: Change the number of axes in the resulting layer. The existing value is deduced from an extremum point.
    • Spacing: Change the spacing value between axes (Default mode).
    • You can combine both options.
  5. To import a pattern table to define a selection, click Import Table in the Table Driven area, and select an Excel file.
  6. Optional: To search already imported tables, enter the "vpmdoc" criteria in the Search box.
  7. To create the pattern into a table-driven table, click .

It is possible to export a pattern table even if no table has already been imported and if the selection pattern is not defined by a table.

With this command, you create a table from selected points. After the selection or creation of the Excel table:
    • The Selection mode is automatically set to From a table.
    • The table name is visible in the box and two more commands appear next it: Export Table and Edit Table .
    • The Import Table command is hidden.
  8. To edit the existing pattern table, click .
  9. Export a pattern table and choose a format for the exported table.

For more information about formats, see About Pattern Tables.

  10. Click Apply after any modification.
  11. Click OK to quit the pattern command.
