Assigning Models

You can assign several model dictionaries to a single structure (where it is used to represent multiple products). Configuration Context consists of a set of dictionaries defining the criteria that can be used to configure the structure. Model objects are dictionaries that can be assigned and contain multiple criteria as Configuration Features, Date, Product states, Units and Manufacturing Plans.

This task shows you how to:

Add Model Dictionaries through Creation of a Configured Product

You can assign model dictionaries while creating a configured product.

Before you begin: Open the Product / Product DS dialog box in Product Structure Design work area. This dialog box is available while creating a product. For more information about creating a product, see Product Structure Design User Guide: Working with Products: Creating a Product.
  1. Select the Configuration tab to determine the model dictionaries.
  2. Click Attach Model as a Configuration Context .
The Search for Model dialog box appears.
  3. To search for the model dictionaries of your choice, you can do one of the following:
    • In the box, enter your search criterion and click Search.
    • Click Advanced Search. For more information about Advanced Search, see 3DEXPERIENCE Basics User Guide: Search:.
A list of model dictionaries corresponding to your search criteria appears.
  4. Select the model dictionary or dictionaries of your choice from the search results list and click OK.
The Context area lists the selected model dictionary or dictionaries.
  5. Select one of the options available under Criteria.

By default, the configuration criteria types are unavailable if no model dictionary is attached to the selected product.

These configuration criteria are used to configure child instances (effectivity definition) within the list of available configuration types classified as Variant or Evolution. For more information about criteria types, see Understanding Effectivity Criteria.

Note: In the Variant Management app, you can add variant and variant values and option group and options to different object types such as product line, model and model version. In the Product Structure Design app, only the variant and variant values and option group and options created under the corresponding model version are available when you assign a model to a product.
  6. Click Detach Model if you want to remove the model already assigned to the product.
A Warning dialog box appears to confirm the removal of the model.
Note: You cannot detach the model dictionary if:
    • any child instance contains effectivity using this model.
    • any predefined Configuration is created using this model.

By default, you can assign and remove a model dictionary from a product if you are designated the role of a VPLMCreator. Authorization is controlled by P&O using Config_AttachDictionary and Config_DetachDictionary command.

  7. Click Finish.
The product reference is created and is associated to a configuration context (giving it access to configuration capabilities).

Add Model Dictionaries through Edit Properties

You can demonstrate how to assign Model dictionaries to an existing product using the Properties dialog box.

Before you begin: Open a product structure in Product Structure Design work area. For more information about opening a product, see Product Structure Design User Guide: Working with Products: Opening a Product.
  1. To edit the product properties, right-click the product of your choice and select Properties.
    The Properties dialog box appears.
  2. Select the Configuration tab to specify configuration characteristics of the product.
  3. Repeat step 2 to 5 of the Add Model Dictionaries through Creation of a Configured Product section to get the required results.

The table at the bottom of the dialog box lists the predefined configurations for the product. In this scenario, the list is empty. For more information about predefined configurations, see Managing Predefined Configurations.

  4. To exit the Properties dialog box, click:
    • Apply to associate your product with the selected model dictionaries and criteria.
    • OK to associate your product with the selected model dictionaries and criteria and close the dialog box.
    • Close to close the dialog box without applying modifications.
