Object Lifecycle

An object's lifecycle is controlled by the policy. Lifecycle page is only shown for the revision object and not for iterations. You can promote or demote only revision objects.

The following life cycle states are supported by X-CAD Design Management for Design/Definition data and Design Resource data types:

Maturity State Description
In Work
  • New data starts as In Work
  • In Work data are fully modifiable
  • In Work data can be switched to Frozen by the owner, or to Released by the Collaborative Space Leader.
  • In Work data can be deleted.

Note: Whenever you create a revision of definition, evaluation or resource data, two In Work revisions of the same data must not exist at the same time. The ability to prevent this from happening is referred to as strict revising. Strict revising is set using the Configuration command in the Web Administration Console.

Frozen
  • Frozen is an intermediate state between In Work and Released. It can be used, for example, for data waiting for approval, or to keep an intermediate state of the design.
  • Data can be switched back and forth between In Work and Frozen, without any revising.
  • Frozen data can be switched to Released state by the Collaborative Space Leader.
Released
  • Data are Released, most often, when ready for production or delivery to an OEM. If BOM applications are in use, Released may mean "ready for Engineering BOM"
  • Released data can only be switched as Obsolete
  • Released data cannot be deleted
  • Released data are published for other Protected projects
Obsolete
  • Obsolete is used when data concerns objects which are no longer manufactured, sold, maintained or must not be used for new designs
  • Obsolete data cannot be promoted
  • Obsolete data cannot be deleted

Notes:
  • In baseline behavior environment, Add/Remove/Rename of states is not supported for policy belonging to "X-CAD Design" application. Topology modification is not supported for policy belonging to "X-CAD Design" application.
  • The Design Resource data types only uses the In Work lifecycle state.
  • Transition checks on Lifecycle are supported.
  • For all MCAD types, the transition control UI allows the Administrator to set rules of transitions control even in cases where they are not relevant. For details, see Content Lifecycle in People & Organizations and Content - Administration guide.
