Renaming CAD Objects

You can rename an entire assembly or an individual component within an assembly using the Rename command. Renaming an object changes the names of all the iterations in all the revision streams associated with that object. When you rename a component within an assembly, the renamed component remains attached to the assembly.

You can rename a design if:

  • You have the required access role to change design names.

Renaming of child component is blocked if the immediate parent (first level) is locked. If a family object is locked then its instance rename is also blocked.

It is recommended that before doing any operations on a renamed object, you should checkout and checkin the object to ENOVIA. This confirms the modifications made to the structure.

Note: Due to API limitations, if the structure of a document is modified in ENOVIA, you must checkout and check in the structure in CATIA.

This task shows you how to:

Renaming CAD Objects

Before you begin: Search for the object you want to rename.
  1. On the Object Summary page, select the object you want to rename and click Actions > Rename.
  2. Enter the new name or select the Auto Name box and select an Autoname Series from the list.

For SolidWorks files, see Rename SolidWorks Objects.

  3. Click Done.

Notes:
  • Before navigating a renamed structure in AutoVue, it is mandatory to check out and check in the structure to ENOVIA.
  • After renaming the balloon number attribute is updated only if the entire structure is checked out, the parts list updated and the structure is checked in again to update the references properly.
  • Due to SolidEdge API limitations, the integration does not handle the 'renaming' of SolidEdge Assembly Instances (SolidEdge assembly family members).

Depending on the server's rename flag setting, when an assembly object is renamed, attachments may be incorrectly renamed and may result in errors when checking out the design.

Rename SolidWorks Objects

You can select and rename a SolidWorks assembly family, component family, instances, and assembly instance using the Rename command. You can also rename a drawing.

  • If the object name does not match the title without extension, the family object name does not change. The file in the object is renamed to the new name. The new name appears in the title attribute of the family and its instances. The same applies if you choose to autoname the object.
  • If the object name matches the title without extension, the family object name is changed to the new name. The file in the object is renamed to the new name.

Rename an instanceThe instance object name does not change. The new name for the instance reflects in the title attribute of the instance. The same applies if you choose to autoname the object.
Rename a drawing The renaming operation is similar to that of an assembly family or component family.
  • If the object name does not match the title without extension, the drawing object name does not change. The file in the object is renamed to the new name. The new name appears in the title attribute of the drawing. The same applies if you choose to autoname the object.
