Managing Inner Islands

You can manage inner islands in Contour-driven operations.

This task shows you how to:

Before you begin:
  • Guides and islands contours must be closed.
  • The Guiding strategy is set to Parallel contour and the Stepover mode is set to Constant 3D.

Set Islands Contours

You can define an island to avoid machining a portion of the part. Below is the result without selecting a inner island contour:

  1. From the Surface Machining section of the action bar, click Contour-driven .
    A Contour-driven entity is added to the manufacturing program. The Contour-driven dialog box opens at the Geometry tab .
  2. Still in the Geometry tab:
    1. Click the red area in the sensitive icon and select the part in the work area.
    2. Double-click anywhere in the work area to confirm your selection and redisplay the dialog box.
  3. Go to the Machining Strategy tab .
    1. Set Guiding strategy to Parallel contour.
    2. In the Strategy tab, set Guiding strategy to Parallel contour.
    3. In the Radial tab, set Stepover to Constant 3D.
  4. In the sensitive icon, click Guide 1.

    The Edge Wizard is displayed.

    1. Select the guide.
      Click OK in the Edge Wizard to validate the selection.

  5. In the sensitive icon, click Island.

    The Edge Wizard is displayed.

    1. Select the island contour.
    2. Click OK in the Edge Wizard to validate the selection.

      Notes:
      • Condition of stop on islands is the same as for the guiding element.
      • Offset on islands has the same value as on the guiding element.



  6. Go to the Tool tab to select a tool.
  7. Click Display or Simulate to check the validity of the machining operation.
    • The tool path is computed.
    • A progress indicator is displayed.
    • You can cancel the tool path computation at any moment before 100% completion.



Select Faces and Detect Islands Contours

You can define islands from faces.

  1. From the Surface Machining section of the action bar, click Contour-driven .
    A Contour-driven entity is added to the manufacturing program. The Contour-driven dialog box opens at the Geometry tab .
  2. Still in the Geometry tab:
    1. Click the red area in the sensitive icon and select the part in the work area.
    2. Double-click anywhere in the work area to confirm your selection and redisplay the dialog box.
  3. Go to the Machining Strategy tab .
    1. Set Guiding strategy to Parallel contour.
    2. In the Strategy tab, set Guiding strategy to Parallel contour.
    3. In the Radial tab, set Stepover to Constant 3D.
  4. In the sensitive icon, right-click Guide 1 and choose Select faces.
    The label turns to Boundary Faces.
  5. Click Boundary Faces.

    The Edge Wizard is displayed.

    1. Select the faces.
    2. Click OK in the Edge Wizard to validate the selection.
    Inner boundaries of the selected faces are detected as islands contours.
  6. Go to the Tool tab to select a tool.
  7. Click Display or Simulate to check the validity of the machining operation.
    • The tool path is computed.
    • A progress indicator is displayed.
    • You can cancel the tool path computation at any moment before 100% completion.

    You can see the islands have been detected automatically.

Include Check

When a check has been defined, it can be included in the tool path computation.

  1. When in Select faces mode (as described in step 4 above), right-click Boundary Faces.
    The context menu is displayed.

    By default, Include Check is not selected.
