Creating Maps

You can create a document map that defines the structure of your document.

  1. From the home page, click New Document Map .
If the map editor showed a document map, it replaces that map with an empty map after prompting you to save any unsaved changes.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Click in the MAP box in the document and enter a title.
    • Double-click the New Document Map text in the tree, enter a title for the document, and press Enter.
The text you enter becomes the title used to identify this map. If you do not change the New Document Map text, that becomes the saved title and you can edit it later. The app uses an auto-generated name (different from the title) that does not show in the map editor but displays in the list of documents maps. The auto-generated name allows you to have two different maps with the same title.

The document initially contains a single, empty topic.

  3. To add more topics to the map, use any of these methods:

    Method to Add Topic Instructions
Drop a topic Drag a topic from another widget to the drop zone .

The app adds the topic to the map and opens it in the topic editor.

Create a new topic Click Insert Topic in the toolbar.

A new empty topic appears in the topic editor and as the last item in the document map. For more information, see Creating Topics.

    Search and add existing topic
    1. Click .
    2. In the Select a Topic dialog box, enter text to search for the name of the topic.
    3. Select the required topic and click Insert.

The app adds that topic to the document map.

  4. Click Save .
The app assigns an auto-generated name (different from the title) that does not show in the map editor but displays in the list of documents maps. The name you entered for the map is saved as the title. The auto-generated name allows you to have two maps with the same title, but that are different maps. The auto-generated name ensures uniqueness, because you could have several map files with the same title, all of which would be found when searching.

After creating a document map, you can add or remove topics, rearrange topics, and include references in any order required to complete the document.
