Managing Applicability

To define the applicability for a change action or change order, you specify the applicability attributes in one or more models associated with it. The synchronization rules for CA with applicability (similar to CA) governed by a CO are:

  • CA with applicability cannot be promoted from the Draft state until the governing CO is moved to the In Work state. This applies only for the formal change lifecycle.
  • If the CO uses the Fast Track policy, the CA with applicability can be promoted from the Draft state before the CO goes to In Work, in which case the CO will also be promoted to In Work.
  • The release of the CA with applicability moves the governing CO to the In Approval state if another pending CA/CA with applicability is connected to it and there is an approver list selected.
  • If there is no approver list selected on the CO, releasing the last CA with applicability promotes the CO to completed.
  • The promotion of the CO to the In Approval state ensures that if a pending CA with applicability does not have any proposed change connected to the CO, it is deleted before promotion.

This task shows you how to:

Before you begin: You can define the applicability depending on the change object, its lifecycle state, and your role:

You can define the applicability for a CA only if:

  • You are the CA owner.
  • The CA is in the Draft, In Work, or In Approval state.
  • If the CA is associated with a product, the product cannot be in the Review, Release, or Obsolete state.

An administrator can edit the applicability of a CA, even if the administrator is not a member of the CA.

To define the applicability for a formal or fast track change order, see the requirements in Formal Change Lifecycle and Fast Track Change Lifecycle for each lifecycle state.

You need to be assigned the Change Management (CHG) and the Configuration Management (CFG) licenses to manage applicability.

Add Models

The CA applicability list comprises all models in which applicability has been defined for the CA. If no models are listed, you must add at least one model.

  1. Click the Applicability category.
  2. In the search field, either enter the name of the model you want to find or click the search icon to open the 3DSearch window. The model that you find is added as a tile.

Note: You can add more than one model at a time using 3D Search.

  3. (Optional) To add more models, click the + icon to open the search window or type directly in the window if it is already open.
  4. (Optional) To remove the model, click the down arrow and select Remove Model. You can only remove models one at a time.

Edit Applicability

To specify the applicability attributes, you edit the applicability for the models associated with the CA. Depending on the content of the model, you can define the applicability using product evolution, manufacturing plans, units, and date criteria.

  1. Click the Applicability category.
  2. In the Applicability View pane, In a model tile for which you want to edit the applicability, click the down arrow.
  3. In the far-right column of the Applicability View list, click the down arrow for a model Select Edit Applicability. The Edit Applicability window opens.
  4. To select one or more types of applicability to define, click the corresponding check box:

    • Product Evolution - Enter a product on which the evolution will be based.
    • Manufacturing plan - Select the manufacturing plan.
    • Unit - Enter a list or one or more ranges of units, each separated by a comma.
    • Date - Enter a date range. The range includes the dates you specify.

  5. Complete the fields for one or more types of applicability you selected.
  6. (Optional) To remove the applicability for a model, click the down arrow in the model tile and select Clear Applicability. You can only remove applicability one model at a time.

Note: Models without applicability attributes will be removed from the list when you navigate from the list.
