Creating a Cable

A cable is a reference object that allows you to manage the lifecycle of your routables.

Important: The following commands are not available for cables:
  • Export Conductors
  • Export in iXF
  • Import Conductors
  • List Extra Conductors
  • Map Conductors
  • Harness Configuration

Before you begin: Create an electrical physical system with one of the following system type property:
  • Unset
  • Electrical Cable

For more information, see Inserting an Electrical Physical System.

Routing Cables
  1. From the Cable section of the action bar, click Cable .
  2. In the Cable Creation panel, define the cable's properties:

    Property Description
Electrical System The electrical physical system in which the cable is created.
    Notes:
    • If you selected an electrical physical system before clicking the Cable command, the name of the selected electrical physical system is already displayed.
    • To create the cable in another electrical physical system, click the box and select a new electrical physical system in the tree.
Derivation Lets you select a customized type of cable.
    General Parameters
    • Name: Name of the cable

      Notes:
      • Under Preferences , clear the Enable explicit naming via panel option to apply a default naming. When the option is cleared, the Name box is not editable.
      • If the Enable explicit naming via panel option is selected and you create multiple cables, the name you enter is incremented.

    • Boundary Length From and Boundary Length To: Lets you specify the cable length inside its start and end extremities.
    • Cutting Length Mode: Lets you specify the cutting length computation mode.
      • Automatic: When this mode is selected:
        • A business rule, EWR_Compute_CableCuttingLength is executed to compute cutting length
        • If the business rule is not available, cutting length and cutting length itinerary are computed and updated automatically according to cutting length formula
        • Cutting length and cutting length itinerary are computed and updated after sync, cable route estimation, extra length modification, boundary length modification, tolerance value modification, and cutting length mode change.
      • Manual: When this mode is selected:
        • Cutting length needs to be set and updated manually
        • Cutting length attribute is editable in Electrical tab of the properties, cable management assistant, spread sheet, and knowledge function.
You can change the default mode using preferences. For more information, see Cutting Length.
    • Cutting Length Tolerance: Lets you specify the cutting length tolerance. By default, it is 0%.
    • Extra Length From and Extra Length To
    • Reference Cable: you can map your new cable with a cable reference to copy the cable reference's attributes to the new cable.

Click Select Reference Cable from PLM Chooser to select a cable reference either from session or from the database.

Reference Attributes Allows to define the attributes of your cable.
Note: If the new cable is mapped with a cable reference, attributes are not editable.
Extremity Management Allows to define the From and To ends of the cable.

You can set the cable extremities by selecting connection points either in the tree or in the 3D area.

Note: By default, a transparent visualization is activated to improve the selection of connection points. To deactivate this visualization, clear Emphasize device visualization in the Preferences .

  3. Define the number of cables to be created, and then click Create.
    • The cables are aggregated under the electrical physical system node in alphanumeric order, provided that the Automatic reorder of cables alphanumerically option is selected at Me > Preferences > App Preferences > 3D Modeling > Electrical 3D Design > Conductor > Cable. The cables are sorted every time a new cable is created or copied to the electrical physical system.

You can also sort the cables manually by right-clicking the electrical physical system node and selecting Order Alphanumerically.

    • The cables appear with the following icon: .
    • Under the representation of your electrical physical system, the new Cable Route objects appear under the Unvalidated node.
  4. Close the panel.

You are now able to define the route of your cables.

Important: To edit the properties of a cable, select the cable in the tree and then click Cable . When you edit a cable, the electrical physical system cannot be modified.
