Importing an EBOM File

You can store parts data in an Excel file and then import the file to either create an EBOM or update an existing EBOM.

Note: The import command is not available in the mobile environment.

Required Access Roles:

  • Baseline: Author
  • App-specific: Design Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, Senior Design Engineer, Senior Manufacturing Engineer

This task shows you how to:

Before you begin:
  • The part into which you import data must be in the correct lifecycle state, as follows:

    • Development phase parts must be in a state before the Released state.
    • Production phase parts must be in the In Work state or earlier.
  • You must provide the parts data in the Excel file before you import it. For information on the data that you need to provide in your Excel file, see About EBOM Import.

Create an EBOM

  1. From the Global toolbar, click > Engineering > Import EBOM.
  2. In the Import BOM From Excel dialog box, browse to the Excel file to import.
  3. To apply change management to the imported BOM and all of its components, select a Work Under Change. See About Work Under Changes.

Note: The Change Control column in your spreadsheet, if the column exists, is ignored.

  4. To enable Engineering BOM Management to import the file while you perform other work, select Submit in Background.

Engineering BOM Management will alert you and send an email to you when the import is complete. If you do not select Submit in Background, the imported parts list will be shown. If any errors occur during the import, a message will report the error(s) and no import list will appear.

Update an EBOM Using BOM Import

You can select a part in an existing BOM and then import part data from a spreadsheet. After Import, the data from the spreadsheet becomes child part data for the part that you selected in the existing BOM.

Note: You cannot edit an existing BOM row (such as changing FN or quantity) using BOM Import. BOM import only adds rows to the existing BOM. If you import (or re-import) a spreadsheet that includes part data that is already in the existing BOM, the imported data will be added to the existing BOM but with different FN values.

  1. Search for and select an existing part.
  2. In the Engineering BOM category select the EBOM tab.
  3. Click the Enable Edit Mode icon, .
  4. Select a part to be the parent part under which the imported parts will be listed.

Note: If you do not select a part, the top level part in the EBOM will become the parent part of the imported parts.

  5. In the toolbar, click Import EBOM.
  6. In the Import BOM from Excel dialog box, browse to the Excel file to import.

Note: You can enable Engineering BOM Management to import the file while you perform other work. Select Submit in Background andEngineering BOM Management will alert you and send an email to you when the import is complete. If you do not select Submit in Background, the imported parts list will be shown. If any errors occur during the import, a message will report the error(s) and no import list will appear.
