Creating an External Shape

You can create an external shape using a surface and a body.

While creating shape features, you can reuse an external shape to build a shape feature.


Before you begin: Open a 3D shape representation.
  1. Launch any capability requiring a shape definition. For example, from the Create section of the action bar, click Shellable Feature , then click External Shape in the Shellable Feature dialog box that appears.
  2. Select a feature, or a body from the tree or create an input body on the fly for External Shape.
  3. Enter a offset value in the Default offset box.
    Important: The default offset value is applied to all faces on the selected body. The default value is 0mm. It takes positive and negative values.
  4. Click OK.


  5. Under Other Offset Faces , select the required faces and click to specify individual offsets for the selected faces.
  6. Optional: Select the Apply to all selected faces check box to apply the same offset value to other selected faces.
  7. In the Fillet tab,
    1. Select the Fillet profile ends check box, to fillet the end faces of open sketches.
    2. Select the Draft fillets check box, to fillet the drafted edges.
    3. From the Type list under Intersection Fillet tab, select among the following, to create fillets at required intersections:

      • Intersection with Core/Cavity
      • Intersection with Core
      • Intersection with Cavity

    4. Select the Fillet radius check box to create fillet by adding material to the feature.
    5. Select the Round radius check box to create fillet by removing material from the feature.
    6. Select the Preserve shell thickness check box to maintain the thickness at fillets.
  8. From the Core type list in the Core tab, select one of the available types and specify the required parameters to define the core (offset) body of the feature.

    The following types are available:

    • Interconnected core
    • Isolated core
    • Select core
