Editing or Selecting a Failure Mode

You can edit or select a failure mode of a function or an operation to be analyzed in a causality relationship of an FMEA table of your system. For a reference table, you can only select failure modes in causality relationships.

The following scenario deals with the Design FMEA.

Before you begin: Select a function in the first cell of a causality relationship in an FMEA table. For more information, see Selecting a Function or an Operation.
  1. To edit a failure mode in a causality relationship, select a failure mode cell.
  2. To associate a failure mode:
    • For tables, do one of the following:
      • Select an existing failure mode in the list.
        Note:
        • This list proposes the failure modes pointing to the selected function.
        • A pattern matching search, which is also case-sensitive, is available to narrow down the list of failure modes.
      • Enter a name to create a new failure mode.
Note: If you select Confirm failure mode creation in the widget preferences, the Create Failure Mode for xxx dialog box enables you to:
        • Enter the failure mode name.
        • Select a customized type, if any.
For more information, see Customizing Preferences.
      • Drag a failure mode from another widget (for example, Bookmark Editor, Search, …) or from Fallible Reference Editor.
    • For reference tables, drag a failure mode from another widget (for example, Bookmark Editor, Search, …) or from Fallible Reference Editor.

The corresponding elements are displayed as follows:

    • The failure mode appears in a tile in the cell.
    • Optional: If an FMEA also exists at a higher level of the Structure Tree, the failure effect of the function is directly calculated and completed. The failure effects cell contains the failure mode and the effect severity defined in the causality relationship of the FMEA at a higher level on a function. This function has the previous failure mode as a failure cause.

You can now edit the failure effects of your system.
