Managing Styles on a Dataset to Define its Color

You can create and reuse styles that change the color of the elements in your datasets. A style can be a simple color you select or based on the value of an attribute.

You can create as many styles as you want on one dataset. If you create many styles on one dataset, the dataset provides you with the list of styles that you created on the dataset. Depending on what you want to see in your experience, you can select the style that best suits your needs. For more information, see About Representation Attributes.

This task shows you how to:

Before you begin:
  • Ensure the attributes that you want to use are exposed. If not, ask the creator of the dataset to expose the attributes.
  • Open the Properties panel. For more information, see Displaying Object Properties.

Create a Style

You can create a style that changes the display color of the elements in your dataset depending on the value of one of its attributes.

You can create as many styles as you want on the dataset.

Important: If you create multiple styles on a dataset, you can upload only the default style called Base Style to the server using Upload Style. For mor information, see Managing Per-dataset Styling.

  1. From your experience, select the dataset for which you want to create a style.
  2. From the Representation attributes area, next to Color, select Advanced Properties > Set, and select one of the options.
    OptionDescription
    Color Creates a style that defines the display color of your dataset. If you select the option, do the following:
    1. Optional: In Name, enter a name.
    2. In Fallback, select the color.
    By Attribute Creates a style that defines the display color of your dataset based on one of its attribute values. If you select the option, do the following:
    1. Optional: In Name, enter a name.
    2. In Attribute, select the attribute on which you want to base your style.
    3. In Method, select the method.
    4. Define the colors and criteria of your style, depending on the method you select. For more information, see Defining Advanced Properties.
  3. Close the Color dialog box.

The created style becomes the active style on your dataset.

Edit a Style

You can edit an existing style to change the display color and criteria of your style, the method, or the attribute.

Before you begin: Make sure the style that you want to edit is the active style of your dataset. For more information, see Select a Style.
  1. From your experience, select the dataset that has the style that you want to edit.
  2. From the Representation attributes area, next to Color, select Advanced Properties > Select > .
  3. Edit the style. For more information, see Create a Style.

Select a Style

You can select the style that you want to make active on your dataset. The active style appears with a blue rectangle on the left side of its name.

Before you begin: Create the style that you want to apply on your dataset. For more information, see Create a Style.
  1. From your experience, select the dataset on which you want to apply another style.
  2. From the Representation attributes area, next to Color, select Advanced Properties > Select, and select the style of interest.

The selected style becomes the active style on your dataset.

Transfer a Style from one Dataset to another Dataset

You can copy and paste a style to transfer the style from one dataset to another dataset.

Before you begin:
  • Verify that the target dataset on which you want to transfer the style has the same attribute as the source dataset.
  • Make sure the style that you want to copy is the active style of the source dataset. For more information, see Select a Style.
  1. From your experience, select the dataset that has the style that you want to transfer.
  2. From the Representation attributes area, next to Color, select Advanced Properties > > Copy.
  3. From your experience, select that dataset on which you want to apply the copied style.
  4. From the Representation attributes section, next to Color, select Advanced Properties > Paste.
    The style is created on the target dataset. If the target dataset has the same attribute as the source dataset, the copied style becomes active.
  5. Optional: Edit the pasted style. For more information, see Edit a Style.

    Note: Your changes appear only in the pasted style. The original style on the source dataset remains unchanged.

The pasted style becomes the active style on your dataset.

Delete a Style

You can delete a style to remove the style from the list of available styles on a dataset.

Before you begin: Make sure the style that you want to delete is the active style of the dataset. For more information, see Select a Style.
  1. From your experience, select the dataset that has the style that you want to delete.
  2. From the Representation attributes area, next to Color, select Advanced Properties > Select > .
