Extrapolating Geometry

You can extrapolate a curve or a surface using context toolbars.

Important:

This task shows the curve extrapolation. To perform a surface extrapolation, select a surface edge and the surface.

Extrapolate a Curve by Defining a Length

You can extrapolate a curve by specifying a length.

  1. Select a plane and click Sketch in the context toolbar.


  2. In Sketcher, create a line using the Line command. For more information, refer to Sketcher User's Guide: Creating Lines.
  3. Exit Sketcher and click the background to validate.
  4. Press Ctrl and select first a vertex of the line and then the line itself.


    The context toolbar appears.
  5. Click Robot in the context toolbar.


    The Robot is attached to the line, and a context toolbar appears.
  6. Click Local mode .
  7. Drag the handle and release it.


    The ruler appears and the curve is extrapolated by the specified length.
  8. Click the background to validate.

An Extrapol feature is created in the tree with a Curvature continuity and a Length limit type.

Extrapolate a Curve Up to an Element

You can extrapolate a curve up to an element.

  1. Select the xy plane and click Sketch in the context toolbar.


  2. In Sketcher, create a vertical line below the yz plane using the Line command. For more information, refer to Sketcher User's Guide: Creating Lines.
  3. Exit Sketcher and click the background to validate.
  4. Press Ctrl and select first the top vertex of the line and then the line itself.


    The context toolbar appears.
  5. Click Robot in the context toolbar.


    The Robot is attached to the line, and the Robot context toolbar appears.
  6. Click Local mode context toolbar.
  7. Drag the handle toward the plane until the copilot appears.

    The copilot appears if the extrapolation is long enough.



    The line is extrapolated up to the plane. The limit type of the Extrapol feature in the tree changes to Up To Element, and the up-to element is displayed by the copilot.
    Note: If you hold Shift while dragging the handle, the curve is extrapolated in length.
  8. Optional: Drag the handle again.


    The copilot disappears and the ruler appears again. The limit type changes to Length.
  9. Click the background to validate.

An Extrapol feature is created in the tree with a Curvature continuity and a Up To Element limit type.

Extrapolate the Two Sides of a Curve Simultaneously

You can extrapolate a curve simultaneously at its both sides.

  1. Select a plane and click Sketch in the context toolbar.


  2. In Sketcher, create a line using the Line command. For more information, refer to Sketcher User's Guide: Creating Lines.
  3. Exit Sketcher and click the background to validate.
  4. Press Ctrl and select the line and both vertices.


    The context toolbar appears.
  5. Click Robot in the context toolbar.


    The Robot is attached to the line, and the Robot context toolbar appears.
  6. Drag the handle and release it.


    The ruler appears and the curve is extrapolated by the specified length on both sides.
  7. Click the background to validate.

An Extrapol feature is created in the tree with a Curvature continuity and a Length limit type.

Extrapolate a Curve Using Different Continuities

You can extrapolate a curve using tangent or curvature continuity.

  1. Select a plane and click Sketch in the context toolbar.


  2. In Sketcher, create a semicircle using the Three Point Arc command. For more information, refer to Sketcher User's Guide: Creating Three Point Arcs.


    The Robot is attached to the semicircle, and the Robot context toolbar appears.
  3. Exit Sketcher and click the background to validate.
  4. Press Ctrl and select the vertex of the arc first and then the arc itself.
    The context toolbar appears.
  5. Click Robot in the context toolbar.


    The Robot is attached to the semicircle, and the Robot context toolbar appears.
  6. Drag the handle and release it.


    The ruler appears and the extrapolation is done with curvature continuity.
  7. Click the Curvature icon displayed at the selected boundary.


    The continuity switches to Tangent .

An Extrapol feature is created in the tree with a Tangent continuity and a Length limit type.

Extrapolate Three Sides of a Surface Simultaneously

You can extrapolate several sides of a surface simultaneously while keeping curvature continuity.

  1. Select a plane and click Sketch in the context toolbar.


  2. In Sketcher, create a spline using the Spline command. For more information, refer to Sketcher User's Guide: Creating Splines.


  3. Exit Sketcher and click the background to validate.
  4. From the Surface section of the action bar, click Extrude to extrude the sketch.


  5. Hide the sketch.
  6. Press Ctrl and select three surface edges and then the surface itself.

    The selection order of the edges is relevant for the extrapolation in case of tangent continuity: If you switch to Tangent during the extrapolation, you can extrapolate only one side of the surface at a time. This will be the edge selected first.

    The context toolbar appears.
  7. Click Robot in the context toolbar.


    The Robot is attached to the surface at the edge which was selected first, and the Robot context toolbar appears.
  8. Drag the handle and release it.


    The ruler appears and the surface is extrapolated in curvature continuity by the specified length on the three selected sides.
  9. Optional: Click Curvature on the first selected edge.


    The continuity switches to Tangent and the extrapolation is done only at the edge selected first.
  10. Click the background to validate.
