Changing the Position and Orientation with Inverse Kinematics

You can change the position of a chain of bones or change the orientation of a final joint by using the inverse kinematics assistant.

You can only define the position and orientation of a final joint. All bones in the chain are automatically placed.

Before you begin: From the Human section of the action bar, click Edit Human to open the panel.

  1. In the panel, click Posture.
  2. In the work area, select a cube-shaped node and move the Robot to specify the position of a body part.
    ExampleBeforeAfter
    Leg position

    Head and eyes position

    Tips:
    • To change the position of a bone (for example, the elbow) without changing the orientation and position of a body part (for example, the hand), drag the arc handle of the Robot.
    • To change the position of a bone and the orientation of a body part, Shift+ drag the arc handle of the Robot.
    • To quickly change the Look at mode, go to the Look at properties section, and click one of the following: Eyes only, Head and eyes, or Spine, head and eyes.
    • To let a human look at a specific target, click Click and Look and select a target in the 3D area. If the human cannot look at the selected target, the human stays still and the body part becomes red. Click again Click and Look to deactivate the mode.

You can also use the Robot parameters panel to define precisely the direction.

  3. To specify the orientation of a joint (for example, the knee or elbow), select a cube-shaped node and move the arc handle.

When joint limits are reached, the body part becomes red.
