Overcrowning Surfaces

You can modify surfaces in a point directly by the specified value. You ca use the, for example, in tool manufacturing to compensate the spring-back of the sheet metal for the whole geometry.

Before you begin:
  • You must have access to the ICEM Shape Morphing app.
  • Open a 3D shape containing a plane surface.

  1. From the Surface section of the action bar, click Overcrowning .
  2. Select a surface.
  3. In the Crowning area, select a Position on the surface to define the overcrown vector origin.
  4. In the Distance box, specify a crowning height.
  5. Optional: Select Scaling and define a scaling factor for the vector display.
  6. Optional: On the Advanced tab, specify an Edge tolerance.

    This value determines which region of the reference surface is considered to be the edge.

    Vector placed in the inner region: bell-shaped modification

    Vector placed in the edge region: the edge is also modified

  7. Optional: Select the Edge Continuity to the reference surface.

    Note: Setting the edge continuity only applies to the reference surface.

  8. Optional: In the Min Order box, specify a the minimum order of the selected elements.
  9. Optional: Modify the Shape of the crowning.

    A small value causes a local and a large value a global modification. The crowning value is kept constant during this modeling. The default setting of the shape value is 1, since with this value an optimum control point distribution can be achieved.

    Shape = 0: local modification

    Shape = 1: default value

    Shape = 3: global modification

  10. Click OK.
    A vector with a length equal to the crowning value is placed at the selected position. You can modify crowning value and direction using the handles in the work area.
