About the Naming of Component Family Definition Items

This section provides you with information about custom naming.

An expression editor allows a family owner to define the identification and naming logic. It offers the same inputs as the previous business rule, but column values can also be used.

For example, the expression can valuate an attribute with a complex combination of column values extracted from the table. In this case, the naming is specific to the family that contains the custom naming expression.

When automatically generating objects, you must make sure that they are unique in the database.

You may also want to control the way those objects are shown on the client side. The default customization for Product references and representations provides an identification based on two attributes: PLM_ExternalID and V_version. The names shown on the client side are based on the concatenations of those two attributes. Under SMB customization, the identification attributes are the same, but the displayed name is based on the V_Name attribute. You need to automatically generate the values of the attributes for resolved items while taking the customization of the defined components into account. Two different strategies are available: either the standard naming strategy based on business rules or a custom naming strategy based on a specific rule stored in the family.
