Controlling Relations Update

This task shows you how to work with relations in Synchronous and in Update relation at global update command modes.

  • When the Synchronous option is checked, the update is launched as soon as an input parameter is modified.
  • When theUpdate relation at global update command option is checked, the update of the relation occurs when the 3DShape is updated.

Before you begin:

  • Create a 3D Shape representation and create two points.
  • Create two Length parameters.
  • Valuate the first parameter and constraint the second Length parameter by the following formula: Length.2=distance (Point.1, Point.2)+Length.1
  • Make sure you have selected Me > Preferences > 3DEXPERIENCE Platform Common Preferences > General > 3D Shape Infrastructure > Update > Manual update: Updates the feature when it is modified. The root is not updated.

Update a Formula

You can update a formula.

  1. Expand the Relations node, right-click Formula.1 and select Properties.
  2. In the Properties window, unselect Update relation at global update command. Click OK to validate.
  3. Double-click Length.1.
    The Edit parameter window appears.
  4. Enter 50 in the value box. Click OK to validate.
    The value of Length.2 is updated automatically and an update icon appears indicating that the update will be relaunched at global update.
  5. Right-click Formula.1 and select Properties.
  6. In the Properties window, select the Update relation at global update check box. Click OK to validate.
  7. Double-click Point.2 in the tree or in the 3D area.
  8. Enter the following values in the Point Definition window and click OK when done:
    • X = 10 mm
    • Y = 20 mm
    • Z = 30 mm

    The formula is not updated and an update icon is displayed next to the formula.

  9. Right-click Formula.1 and select Local Update.
    The formula and Length.2 are updated.

Update an Equation

In this example, you change three parameters, a, b and c before solving the equation. To ensure the stability of the equation, the update must be launched after the three parameters are changed. Thus you need to select Update relation at global update.

  1. Create four real type parameters, a, b, c, and x. x is a parameter valuated by an equation based on the other three parameters (a, b, and c).
  2. Valuate the parameters: a =1. b=2. c=1.
  3. Click Set of Equations to create a set of equation and enter the following equation: a*x**2+b*x+c==0. Click Parse and use the left arrow to move the a, b, and c parameters to the Constant parameters column. Click Solve when done and OK.
  4. In the Properties window, select Update relation at global update. Click OK to validate.
  5. Double-click a in the tree. In the Edit parameter dialog box, enter 3 in the value box. Click OK.
  6. Double-click b in the tree. In the Edit parameter dialog box, enter 5 in the value box. Click OK.
  7. Double-click c in the tree. In the Edit parameter dialog box, enter 2 in the value box. Click OK.
  8. Right-click the equation in the tree and select Local update.
    The equation is updated as well as the x value.
    Note: For the equation to be solved, the Update relation at global update command option must be checked and the relation must be either integrated to the global update or updated manually using Local Update.
