Duplicating Objects

You can create a copy of the selected objects.

A duplicate is a new object which content is copied from the selected object, and that behaves as if created independently. This creates a new revision family based on existing content.

Note:

Required access roles: Contributor, Author, Leader, Owner. For more information, see Collaborative Lifecycle Access to Content.

Before you begin:
  • Select all connected objects together to duplicate the connections and move them to the new objects. Otherwise, the new objects will remain connected to the initial object. For more information, see Relation Management.
  • If you duplicate a filtered object with the Duplicate command, all its children are inserted under the duplicate, regardless of the filter. To duplicate a filtered object, use the Duplicate Advanced command.

Context: The following diagram shows examples of duplicates:

  • 1: The revision family created with the New command, that created P1 A (initial object of the revision family)
  • 2: The revision family created with the Duplicate command, that created P4 A (initial object of this revision family) based on P1 B.

  1. Select one or several objects.
  2. From the Compass, click Collaborative Lifecycle.
  3. From the Lifecycle section of the action bar, click Duplicate .

The Duplicate command can be run from a Navigation tab, from an Authoring tab, or from a Search Result tab.

    The Duplicate dialog box appears.

The Summary section displays the number of duplicated objects, and Information about the size (in KB) of the representations to be duplicated (if any) that are transferred to the vault.

If you selected several objects, all the content to be duplicated is displayed as well as all required content automatically added to the scope (for example, the representation of a 3D part).

  4. Optional: Select the following options, available depending on the selected objects:

    • Whole structure: also duplicates the child objects of the selected objects
    • All Parents: duplicates all the parent nodes of the selected objects, up to the root of the tab.
Note: This option is only available when the command is started from a navigation or authoring tab.

  5. Optional: In the Naming Option section, enter the Identification String that is used to name the duplicated content. For more information about the User defined identification string option, see Duplication.
  6. To add a prefix to the title of the duplicates, enter it in the Duplication String box.
  7. Click OK.
The duplicate is created, and a confirmation message appears. No further save action is required.

Depending on the type of the initial tab, a new Navigation tab, a new Authoring tab, or a new Search Result tab appears, and shows the duplicated objects. Multiple tabs can be displayed if you initially selected unconnected objects.
