About Business Goals

Business goals are sets of objectives, goals, or requirements for the host company that are to be fulfilled by individual projects. Executives and project leaders can monitor a project's overall performance (including budgets, tasks, risks, etc.) to ensure that it meets these goals. Only people assigned to the Business Manager role can create, edit, and delete business goals, although all employees of the host company can view the company's goals. Employees of companies other than the host company cannot view or edit business goals.

About Projects

When a project is created to satisfy a business goal the Project Lead who creates the project needs to grant access to a person who has the role of Business Manager. The Business Manager can update the goal and associate it with the project. Business Managers can create new projects from the Business Goals page if they have Project Lead access.

A project can fulfill more than one business goal. However, it is recommended that each goal have a different effective date so financial data is not reported twice and a business goal can be fulfilled by one or more projects.

Below is an example of a simple case where a top-level goal is broken up into different strategies to be fulfilled by projects.

Business goals can be in the Draft, In Work, or Completed states but Completed goals are not listed. When a goal is created, its state is Draft. When an assigned project is promoted to the In Work state, the business goal is automatically promoted to In Work. Alternatively, the Business Manager can promote the goal to In Work manually. When the last assigned project is promoted to the Completed state, the business goal is automatically promoted to Completed. Business goals in the Completed state cannot be edited, but if they need to be revised, Business Managers can demote them back to In Work.
