Editability for Materials

The editability mechanism helps you restrict user access to commands and visualization modes.

The following elements are considered as material entities:

  • Materials
  • Material domains
  • Applied materials
  • Material vectors

The editability mechanism lets you control the modification rights for material entities in a session. The mechanism helps you inform the user if a material entity can be edited using specific read-only or read/write icon masks displayed both in the tree and in the Save dialog box. For more information, see Saving Content.

If a user modifies a material entity that has been designated as read-only by the editability mechanism, a warning appears and indicates that the modifications cannot be saved to the database. Attempts to modify a material domain definition or to reorder covering material layers are denied.

Depending on the object to be modified and on the user who wants to make the modification, you can edit objects in a session and save them in the database under the following circumstances:

  • The user is the lock owner.
  • The user has the security privileges allowing the object's modification.
  • The object is in a modifiable maturity status.
  • The object belongs to the local site.
  • The object has not been concurrently modified since it has been loaded in a session.

To activate editability, click Switch to Read-Only in the Collaborative Lifecycle app. For more information, see Switching Apps.

Tip: To modify a read-only material or product, right-click the object in the tree or in the 3D area and select Edit > Switch to Edit Mode.... See 3DEXPERIENCE Platform: Managing Editability.
