Creating and Modifying Meshing Rules

You can create a meshing rules document or modify an existing one. A meshing rules document contains a set of parameters that define mesh specifications, topological specifications, quality criteria, and rules for geometric features such as holes, fillets, and beads.

  1. From the Automated Modeling section of the action bar, click Meshing Rules Editor .
The Meshing Rules Editor dialog box appears.
  2. To create a new meshing rules document, select a Rules type and enter a name in the Meshing Rules box.

You can create rules for the following types of meshes:

    • Beam
    • Octree Triangle
    • Octree Tetrahedron
    • Surface Triangle
    • Surface Quad
    • Sweep
    • Tetrahedron
Note: Not all parameters are applicable to each mesh type.

For more information on meshing, see the Multiphysics Meshing Guide.

  3. To modify an existing meshing rules document:
    1. Click .
The Object Selection dialog box appears.
    2. Select one of the following tabs:

      • From Search to select a meshing rules document from all the meshing rules documents stored in the database.
      • From File to import a meshing rules document stored on your computer.
      • From Session to select a meshing rules document from the meshing rules documents already loaded in your session.

    3. Click OK in the Object Selection dialog box.
The Meshing Rules Editor dialog box is updated and displays the meshing rules that are defined in the selected document.
  4. Specify the Mesh parameters.

For more information about the available parameters, see Basic Mesh Parameters.

  5. Specify the Geometry parameters.

For more information about the available parameters, see Geometry Parameters.

The Geometry parameters are available for tetrahedron, surface triangle, and surface quad meshes.

  6. Specify the Quality parameters.

Quality parameters are available for all mesh rule types except beam and tetrahedron.

For more information about the available parameters, see Quality Parameters.

For definitions and images of the quality criteria, see the Quality Criteria dialog box, located with the Quality Analysis tools in the Check section of the action bar.

  7. Specify Maximum nodal deviation parameters.

Maximum nodal deviation parameters are available only for surface triangle and surface quad meshes.

For more information about the available parameters, see Maximum Nodal Deviation Parameters.

  8. Specify Feature parameters to manage rules for geometric features such as holes, fillets, and beads.

For more information about the available parameters, see Feature Parameters.

Feature parameters are available for tetrahedron, surface triangle, and surface quad meshes.

To edit, delete, activate, or deactivate an existing rule, use the context menu options.

  9. Click one of the following:
    • Close to cancel the modifications and to close the dialog box.
    • Apply to save the meshing rules.

The Meshing Rules Editor dialog box remains open to continue modifying parameters if necessary.

    • OK to save the meshing rules and to close the dialog box.
If the meshing document does not already exist, the Document / Document Customized dialog box appears when you click Apply or OK. If needed, modify the name of the meshing rules document in the Name box, and click Finish.

If the meshing rules document already exists, a message appears when you click Apply or OK. Click one of the following:

    • Yes to overwrite the meshing rules document with the current modifications.
    • No to cancel the creation of the meshing rules document.
