Identifying Duplicate Elements and Nodes

You can identify duplicate elements or duplicate nodes in a mesh. Duplicate elements are elements that share the same nodes. Duplicate nodes are nodes that are coincident or very close.

Before you begin: Meshes must exist.

  1. From the Check section of the action bar, click Duplicate Checker .
The Duplicate Checker dialog box appears.
  2. Select a Visualization mode:

    • Show all duplication zones.
    • Show the current duplication zone with context.
    • Show the current zone only.

A duplication zone is the area surrounding a single instance of duplication.

The selected zones are displayed in the model view.
  3. Choose whether to check for duplicate nodes or elements; for duplicate nodes, enter a clearance value.

The clearance determines how close together nodes must be to be considered as duplicates. The clearance must be smaller than the minimum edge length to prevent the end nodes of a short edge from being marked as duplicates.

The check is run immediately upon selection (press Enter or click anywhere in the dialog box).

If duplicates are found, the Summary section displays the number of duplicates and the number of zones impacted. A separate Duplication Zone Description includes visibility controls, locations, and indicates the meshes involved.

The model view is updated as follows:

    • Duplicate elements are highlighted in red, and other elements are highlighted in green.
    • Duplicate nodes are highlighted in red, and the elements linked to a duplicate node are highlighted in light blue.
Note: If you customize the visibility or colors in a zone, your changes are reset when you switch to another zone.

  4. To focus on and scan the duplicate elements or nodes, select Autofocus, and use the browse buttons.

Tip: You can use the clipping box tool to better visualize the duplicate elements or nodes while you browse them. To learn more, see Using the Clipping Box.

  5. To view the duplicates as a list, click .

You can view the list within the Duplicate Checker dialog box and use the icons above the list to close the list or to extract it to a separate dialog box.

  6. When you are finished checking your model, click Close to close the dialog box.
