About Target Shapes

Target shapes are the primary objects that you modify in an app. They are either a 3D shape or an abstraction shape that you can edit.

Selecting a Target Shape

When you need to modify the structure of a design for use in simulations, the target shape is what you are modifying. If you own or have permission to edit the design and it contains only one 3D shape, that 3D shape automatically becomes the target shape. If you do not have permission to edit the 3D shape or if there are multiple shapes available, you must choose the shape on which you plan to work. For example, if you import a model from SOLIDWORKS, you cannot edit the original design.

When you switch from another simulation app to Simulation Model Preparation, you choose the target shape that you are going to modify. If there is only one editable shape (either a 3D shape or an abstraction shape), the app opens with that shape selected. For any other case, you must select a shape or create an abstraction shape that references the shape that you need to modify. For more information, see Model Assembly Design: Abstraction Shapes.
