Creating Sew Surface Features

You canSew Surface lets you sew all types of surfaces onto the bodies. Sewing is a Boolean operation combining a surface with a body. This capability adds or removes material by modifying the surface of the solid.

Note: Depending on your role, you may not have access to this functionality.

Depending on your geometry, two kinds of sewing operations can be performed.

This task shows you how to sew surfaces using simplify geometry.

  1. From the Idealize section of the action bar, click Sew Surface .

The Sew Surface.x dialog box appears.

  2. Select the required object as Object to sew.

  3. Select Faces to remove, if any.
  4. Select the Simplify geometry check box.
If the resulting solid contains connected faces defined on the same geometrical support (faces separated by smooth edges), these faces get merged into one single face.

Arrows appear indicating the side where material is added or kept. Note that clicking an arrow reverses the given direction. The arrows must point towards the solid.

  5. Click OK.
The surface is sewn onto the body. The solid is now sewn into one single face. SewSurface.x node is added to the tree.
Simplify geometry option selected: Continuous bottom face

Simplify geometry option cleared: Connected bottom face

Note: If any of the selected faces or edges are invalid, the app highlights these invalid features in red and a flag pointing to the invalid edge or face is displayed.
  6. Double-click SewSurface.x node in the tree to edit it.
  7. Click OK.
Note: If the Me > Preferences > App Preferences > 3D Modeling > 3D Modeling Core > Part Design > Feature > Inherit surface colors from surface or reference objects option is selected, the feature inherits input surface feature colors.
  8. Right-click the sew surface feature node in the tree and select SewSurface.x object > Reset surface colors to solid.
The feature no longer inherits the surface colors.
Note: Similarly, if the inherit surface colors from surface or reference objects option is cleared, you can right-click the node and select SewSurface.x object > Inherit input surface color.
