Search Operators and Filters

This topic lists the operators and filters you can use and combine to define the Query of Social Analytics.

Note: Your platform role may not allow you to configure Social Analytics widgets.

General Information

Keywords you enter are not case-sensitive and accents are ignored. For example, Dassault Systèmes matches Dassault Systèmes, Dassault Systemes, dassault systèmes, and dassault systemes.

The following characters are recognized: &, @, %, ©, ®, $, ¥, ₡ , £, € , ¢, ₩, ₭ , ₮. Any other special characters, such as !, are ignored.

Boolean and Proximity Operators

You can enter Boolean and proximity operators in the field of the Query parameter.

The results only include the items that match the exact clause that is inside the quotes. Apostrophes (' ') and smart quotes (" ") are ignored.

Wildcard operator. Supports partial word matching for full text search. When used with filters, only matches full words. Very resource intensive; use sparingly.

The results only include the items in which both the words preceding and following the operator occur close together and the preceding word occurs after the following word.

pacific AFTER california: pacific and california must both occur close together and pacific must occur after california.

The results only include the items that match both sides of the AND.

The results only include the items in which both the words preceding and following the operator occur close together and the preceding word occurs before the following word.

pacific BEFORE california: Both pacific and california must both occur close together and pacific must occur before california.

BUTNOT1

The results only include the items in which there is at least one occurrence of the clause preceding the operator but no match to the clause following the operator.

pacific BUTNOT "pacific street": There must be at least one occurrence of the word pacific that is not followed by the word street.

NEAR1

The results only include the items in which both the words following and preceding the operator occur and are close together.

pacific NEAR california: pacific and california must both occur in the item and there must be no more than 16 words separating them.
NEXT1

The results only include the items in which the word preceding the operator occurs before the word following the operator and the words are adjacent.

pacific NEXT ocean: pacific must occur before ocean and the words must be adjacent.

NOT

The results include the items that both match the clause preceding the NOT and do not match the clause following the NOT.

You can enter a minus sign instead of entering NOT.

1: This is a proximity operator and, as such, is resource-intensive. Avoid using more than one per query and using one altogether in long queries.

Filters

You can add filters to the query by either selecting them from the Filters pane or by selecting them from the autocomplete list that appears when you click in the field of the Query menu.

The table below lists all the filters you can enter in this field.

If you select negative, the results only include the items that have been detected as being written in a negative tone.

If you select neutral, the results only include the items that have been detected as being written in a neutral tone.

If you select positive, the results only include the items that have been detected as being written in a positive tone.

If you select false, the results only include the items that do not contain any enclosure, that is a file attachment.

If you select true, the results only include the items that contain at least one enclosure, that is a file attachment.

expression: Enter the expression between quotes.

Prerequisite: Get to know available expressions from the filters pane.

The results only include the items that contain the expression you have entered.

Expressions are related terms extracted from the article title or body2 by Exalead CloudView.

Enter a date value in one of the following formats:

  • yyyy-mm-dd
  • -nn[days|weeks|months|years]
  • (nn [days|weeks|months|years] ago)
  • ([first|last] day of [last|this] month)
  • ([Monday|Tuesday|...] [last|this|next] week)

The results only include the items that were published within the period you have defined using the from: and to: filters.

"week" is Monday through Sunday.

Recommendation: The from: and to: filters are especially useful when you only want to apply a period to a specify clause of the query. To apply a period to the whole query, define the Period parameter. For more information, see Edit the Period.

The results only include the items to which you or another user of the platform added the Opinion you have selected.

The results only include the items that contain the name of an organization that matches the text you have selected.

Select a value from the autocomplete list.

 The results only include the item that match your Proxem ontology. This filter is only available and customizable on request to eligible Proxem Studio users.
sentiment:

Select a value from the autocomplete list.

The results only include the items to which you added an Opinion that is associated with the sentiment you have selected. For more information about sentiments, see Understanding and Using Opinions.

Enter a text value.

The results only include the Tweets and the articles whose title contain the text value you have entered.

The results only include the Tweets whose reach count matches the sign and the value you have entered. The reach count of a Tweet is computed from the number of followers and of Retweeters of the author.

The results only include the Tweets whose followers ratio—that is the followers to following ratio of the Twitter author—match the sign and the value you have entered. A ratio of 2 means that the author has twice as many followers as following.

If you have selected false, the results only include the items that do not contain any video enclosure.

If you have selected true, the results only include the items that contain at least one video enclosure.

2: Some RSS feeds may only include article abstracts instead of full articles. Mozilla's Readability technology is used to parse full articles—even if they are not included in the RSS. If full articles cannot be parsed, information is extracted from the article abstracts contained in the RSS.

Combination of Opinion-related Filters

You can combine the filters that concern Opinions, that is the following filters: opinion, user, and sentiment. For example, opinion,sentiment,user:OpinionName,SentimentName,Username. In this case, the results only include the items that have an Opinion that matches all the filters of the combination.
