Defining or Editing Variant/Option Effectivity Inline

You can define or edit the variant/option effectivity expression for a product in the structure using inline editing.

Important: When the model defined as a product's configuration context is in the Private lifecycle state and you are not the owner of that model, you cannot successfully view or edit the variant/option effectivity of the product.

Before you begin: To be able to edit the variant/option effectivity of a product inline:
  • Your assigned role must allow you to modify the product structure.
  • You must have either the Configuration Engineer or Product Management role.
  • Your Administrator must have decoupled variant and evolution effectivity.
  • You must have configured the Variant/Option column to display in the Product Structure Editor. For more information, see Displaying Effectivity Columns.
  1. Click in the Variant/Option column of the product for which you want to define or edit variant/option effectivity.
The Edit Variant/Option Effectivity dialog box opens:
    • If you selected a product with only a single model attached as a configuration context, you see only the variant/option effectivity associated with that configuration context.
    • If you selected a product with up to five models attached as a configuration context, each model has a collapsed list entry. Expand a model entry to see the defined variant/option effectivity for that configuration context.
    • If you selected a product with more than five models attached as a configuration context, select a model from the list. Use this model as the configuration context to define or edit variant/option effectivity for the product.
Note: If you have already defined evolution effectivity for a product, when you define its variant/option effectivity, the variants, variant values, option groups, and options are automatically filtered to include only those that are available based on the product evolution effectivity.
  2. To clear the entire effectivity expression, click Clear Expression.
  3. To edit the effectivity expression, click in the effectivity editor field below the model's Marketing Name.
  4. From the editor list, select a variant, variant value, option, or option group to include in the variant/option effectivity expression.

Note: You can enter characters to filter the list to include only those items that contain those characters.

  5. From the editor list, select a standard operator or grouping character to include in the variant/option effectivity expression.

The following standard operators and grouping characters are available:

    • AND
    • OR
    • NOT
    • (
    • )
Note: Your Administrator may have customized the separators and grouping characters used in variant/option effectivity expressions.

  6. To remove a variant, variant value, option, option group, or operator from the variant/option effectivity expression, select it, then click .
  7. Verify the validity of the variant effectivity expression as you build it.

Note: Any element in the variant/option effectivity expression that is not valid in that context is displayed in red. Hover over the element for a message that explains why it is not valid.

  8. Click OK to save it when you have specified all of the variants, variant values, option groups, options, and operators in the variant/option effectivity expression.

The variant/option effectivity expression for the product is now displayed in the Variant/Option column of the product.
