Copying a Requirement

You can copy an existing requirement to use it as the foundation for a new requirement. The copy becomes the new requirement, which you can view and edit as needed. You can copy a requirement from either the Requirements page (see Requirements Page) or a requirement's Properties page (see Requirement Properties Page).

Required responsibilities:

  • Baseline: Leader (when the object is in the Frozen state) or Author


Before you begin: View the list of requirements. See Requirements Page.
  1. Select the requirement that you want to copy.
  2. From the toolbar, select Actions > Duplicate .
  3. Complete the following required fields for the copied requirement:

    Field NameDescription
    NameType a name or short descriptive string, or select AutoName. As you type, if a matching name appears in a drop-down list, you can click to select it.
    RevisionType the revision number or code.

  4. Complete the following optional fields for the copied requirement, if needed:

    Field NameDescription
    TitleType a short descriptive identifier for the requirement.
    DescriptionType a detailed description of the requirement.
    Sub RequirementSelect what you want to do with any sub requirements:

    • Duplicate: Duplicate the sub requirements along with the copied requirement.
    • Reference: Reference the sub requirements in the copied requirement.
    • None: Ignore all sub requirements in the copied requirement.

    Downstream RequirementSelect what you want to do with any downstream requirements:

    • Duplicate: Duplicate the downstream requirements along with the copied requirement.
    • Reference: Reference the downstream requirements in the copied requirement.
    • None: Ignore all downstream requirements in the copied requirement.

    ParameterSelect what you want to do with any parameters associated with the copied requirement:

    • Duplicate: Duplicate the parameters along with the copied requirement.
    • Reference: Reference the parameters in the copied requirement.
    • None: Ignore all parameters in the copied requirement.

    Test CaseSelect what you want to do with any test cases associated with the copied requirement:

    • Duplicate: Duplicate the test cases along with the copied requirement.
    • Reference: Reference the test cases in the copied requirement.
    • None: Ignore all test cases in the copied requirement.

    Use CaseSelect what you want to do with any use cases associated with the copied requirement:

    • Duplicate: Duplicate the use cases along with the copied requirement.
    • Reference: Reference the use cases in the copied requirement.
    • None: Ignore all use cases in the copied requirement.

    Copy with linkSelect Create clone relation to create a link from the copied requirement to the original requirement.

  5. Click Create and close.

The copied requirement now appears in the list of requirements. For traceability, the copied requirement is listed on the parent requirement's Cloning Information page as a cloned object, and the parent requirement is listed on the copied requirement's Cloning Information page as the source object.
