Creating a Shell Expansion View

You can generate a shell expansion view by expanding the shell plate surfaces in the transverse direction. It is used for checking dimensions, topology, and structural integrity of the shell plates and also for verification of the seams, butts, and internal hull structure of the shell plating.

Before you begin:
  • Clear the Disable generative view style usage check box in Me > Preferences > App Preferences > 3D Modeling > Mechanical Systems > Drafting > Administration.
  • Set the ShellExpDrawingTemplate resource of the Structure Resource set in Data Setup.

  1. Open the structure system and draw a reference line in the X direction.

The reference line should be a straight line parallel to the center line of the ship.

  2. From the Drafting section of the action bar, click Shell Expansion .
The Shell Expansion dialog box appears.
  3. In the Shell Plates box, select a shell plate.
  4. In the Reference box, select a reference line.
  5. Optional: In the Geometric Curve(s) box, select the curves on the shell plates.
  6. Optional: Set the shell expansion options:
    1. Click Preferences...
The Shell Expansion Preferences dialog box appears.
    2. In the GVS Template list, select a generative view style template.
    3. In the Select Plane of Symmetry box, select a plane.
    4. Select the Starboard or Portside option depending upon the selected shell plate.
    5. Click OK.
  7. Click OK in the Shell Expansion dialog box.

The progress bar appears indicating the shell expansion view generation. A new node is added in the tree indicating the generated shell expansion drawing of the structure system. You can double-click the drawing node to view the shell expansion drawing.

Notes:
  • Expansion of the shell panels is possible only on any one side of centerline i.e. starboard or portside.
  • Multi-selection of the shell panels is possible. However, the selected panels should lie only on any one side of the centerline i.e. starboard / portside.
  • Beams are excluded from the shell expansion drawing
  • Stiffeners limited by shell panels are not generated in the shell expansion drawing, for example, deck transverse stiffener limited by the shell panels.
  • You cannot update the shell expansion drawing. You need to create new drawing if any modifications are done.
  • The shell expansion operation is performed individually per structure system. Therefore, the shell panels from different structure systems may get overlapped in the shell expansion drawing.
