You can select the body that is modified by a topology optimization and define any
regions to preserve (exclude) from the optimization.
Before you begin: You must define the regions to be preserved by creating
partitions in the
Simulation Model Preparation
app.
For more information, see
Simulation Model Preparation.
For hex meshed regions, you must use the partition hex mesher to
accurately create the partitions that define the design space and preserved
regions.
-
From the Design Variables section of the action bar,
click Design Space
.
- Optional:
Enter a descriptive
Name.
-
Select a Body to optimize.
All volumes in the body are automatically added to the table. The largest volume is
assumed to be the design space, and smaller volumes are assumed to be preserved
regions.
-
Specify the preserved volumes by clicking the icon in the
Volumes column of the Preserve Volumes
table.
The icon switches between for preserved
volumes and for volumes included
in the design space.
The mass of each volume is displayed in the table. The ratio of each volume's
mass to the total mass is also shown.
- Optional:
Click Add preserved region
in the toolbar above the Preserve Volumes from Faces
table, and select one or more faces from the model.
All
elements attached to the selected faces are defined as preserved volumes.
- Optional:
From the Mesh uniformity options, click
Verify to check the uniformity of the size of the elements in
the mesh.
Creating a fine, uniform mesh before running the topology optimization can help you
produce a better optimized shape.
If all elements pass the uniformity check, the panel updates the mesh uniformity
status to read Passed check.
If some elements fail the uniformity check, the Quality Report
panel appears, providing a summary of the good, poor, and bad elements according to
the uniformity metric. You can use the Quality Report to
navigate to the poor and bad elements, review the worst elements, and assess the
element types and failure criteria. For more information about mesh quality controls,
see Simulation | Multidiscipline and Multiscale | Mesh Creation | Checking the Mesh.
The mass of the preserved region is estimated based on the
mesh element size. A summary of the total mass assigned to preserved regions and the ratio
of the preserved mass to the total body mass is displayed at the bottom of the
dialog.
