Importing Abaqus Materials

You can import a material definition from an existing Abaqus input file. The imported material includes a Simulation domain that captures all of the appropriate material properties from the Abaqus definition.

By default, the import process assumes that your selected Abaqus material data are specified in the default material dimensions. If the materials you are importing use different dimensions, you can customize the units used. For more information, see Units in the Native Apps Preferences Guide.

Defining Material Options
  1. Select Add > Import.
    The Import dialog box appears.
  2. In the Files of type: field, select Abaqus_materials (*.inp).
The Options expander is updated with a Units tabbed region.
  3. Browse to the Abaqus input file, and click Open.
  4. Optional: From the Report options, select Save report to generate a report about the import process that includes information about the input file you selected and the unit mappings you chose. You can also customize the report name and the directory to which the app generates it.
  5. Optional: From the Units options, customize the dimensions used for the principal units in the Abaqus materials. You can specify dimensions for any of the following units:
    • Length
    • Mass
    • Time
    • Temperature
    • Angle
    • Amount of substance
  6. Click OK.

The Import dialog box closes, and the imported material is opened in the Material Definition app with all supported Abaqus keywords, parameters, and parameters values converted to their equivalent values in the Simulation domain. A full list of the Abaqus material data supported by the import process is available in Material Options Supported for Import from Abaqus or Export to Abaqus.

Warning: The material property values in the Abaqus input file are rounded off during import according to the General dimensions display options in the Me > Preferences > All Preferences > 3D Modeling > Multi Discipline Automated Engineering > Knowledge Basics > Units panel.

The app also opens an Import Report panel that summarizes any errors or warnings related to the material import.
