Simulation Model Preparation

You can use the Simulation Model Preparation app to enhance the geometry of a model for use in simulations. Simulation Model Preparation can allow you to edit the geometry even if you cannot modify the original model.

The goal of simulation is to produce results that accurately represent real-world models and their interactions with the world around them. However, you may often want to modify geometric features that complicate the simulation and do not impact design intent. You can perform editing actions such as:

  • Suppressing features
  • Merging adjacent features
  • Closing gaps in imprecise geometry

Geometry modification tools are located in the Simulation Model Preparation app, which is accessible from the Model context in the standard area of the action bar in any Model Creation or Scenario Creation app. For more information, see the Standard Area information in the Action Bar topic.

When you enter Simulation Model Preparation, you can select a target shape to edit. If you have full permission to edit the original model, the target shape is the 3D shape that you are editing. For more information, see Simulation Model Preparation: Target Shapes. If you cannot edit the original model or want to edit a copy of that model, you can create an abstraction shape that refers to the original geometry. For more information, see Model Assembly Design: Abstraction Shapes.

When modifying geometry for simulations, your intent is to produce a simplified version of the model that is easier to mesh. Be careful not to change the geometry in ways that would later cast doubt on the validity of your simulation results. For example, removing a cast, stamped, or machined logo does not usually change the mechanics of a model; however, smoothing a fluid passage can change the flow behavior.
