Defining Material Options

Material options in a Simulation domain specify the physical characteristics of the material.

The material options can be displayed in a tree view organized by category or in a list view.

Before you begin: Specify the material for which you want to define Simulation domain options by doing either of the following:
  • Use the procedure in Creating a Simulation Domain to create a Simulation domain and open the Material Definition: Simulation Domain dialog box.
  • Edit a material that is already assigned to a component of your model. From the Setup section of the action bar, click , then select a component of your model from the work view or from the tree. Selections can be made in the work view only when the FEM Representation is displayed.

Modifying a Material Appearance Domain
  1. To add an option to the Simulation domain, select the Option Name check box.

Notes: You can expand all material option categories down to their lowest level by right-clicking any option and selecting Expand all from the list that appears.

The page icons that appear to the right of some options describe whether the options have been defined in one or more behaviors. means that the selected option is defined in one of the behaviors, and means that the selection option has been defined in multiple behaviors.

  2. To define the material option, complete the fields that appear to the right of the Options field. See Simulation Materials, for more information.

Note: When you finish entering data for the selected material option, the app validates your entries to confirm that you specified entries for all required fields and, if necessary, that your entries are valid for each field. For example, if a particular material property must be greater than zero, the validation checks that field for positive values before allowing you to save the option or behavior.

If your data fails this validation, the app highlights the invalid material option in red and provides a tooltip that you can hover over to diagnose the problem.

  3. Once a material option is defined, you can edit it, clear it, or duplicate it.
    • To edit a material option, click the option in the Options field and revise the input data.
    • To clear a material option, either hover over the option and click the that appears on the right side of the highlighted area, or right-click the option in the Options field and select Delete.
    • To duplicate a material option, right-click the option in the Options field and select Duplicate.
  4. You can change the material option display.
    • Click Switch to List View to display the material options in a list view. Selected options appear at the top of the list.
    • Click Switch to Tree View to display the material options in a tree view organized by category.

Important: Propagate the new or updated material definition to the database before using it in an app (see Product Finder and Lifecycle Management User's Guide: Creating, Opening and Saving Objects: Saving).
