About Templates

A template acts a building block for an object. You can use the defined templates to create another SOLIDWORKS object.

You can create a template in SOLIDWORKS by choosing an appropriate template type in Save As dialog box. The available templates types are:

Object Type Template File Type
Part *.prtdot
Assembly *.asmdot
Drawing *.drwdot

Templates in 3DEXPERIENCE

You can perform the following in 3DEXPERIENCE:

  • View templates in MySession: As the SOLIDWORKS template files are like regular SOLIDWORKS files that can be loaded in SOLIDWORKS, such template files are also visible in MySession widget. Templates do not have any external references and hence they appear in a single row in MySession. The icon representation of templates in MySession is as below:
Object Type Template File Type Representation in MySession
    Part *.prtdot
    Assembly *.asmdot
    Drawing *.drwdot
  • Save templates: The template files can be saved in the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform by using the Save command available in MySession. If the template is not saved in the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform, the Create Template dialog appears. For more information, see Creating a Template.
  • Download templates: When you connect to the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform, the templates that are missing or updated are automatically downloaded on the local disk. Once all the templates are downloaded, a message is displayed informing about the availability of templates. The downloaded templates are automatically configured in SOLIDWORKS and can be accessed in the 3DEXPERIENCE tab of File > New dialog box.

Notes:
  • Templates that are in the Obsolete state are not downloaded.
  • If the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform contains templates created by different SOLIDWORKS versions, all these templates are downloaded to the local disk. The File > New dialog of SOLIDWORKS shows all the templates. If you select a template that is not compatible with the current version of SOLIDWORKS, an error message is displayed.
