Creating a Characteristic

You can create a characteristic and attach it to the part.


Before you begin: Required access roles:
  • Baseline: Author
  • App-Specific: Product Data Originator
  1. From the Parts page, click the name of the part.
    The properties page for the part appears. For more information, see Parts.
  2. From the category menu, click Characteristics.
    All the characteristics that are associated to the part are displayed. For more information, see Characteristics on Parts.
  3. Click Create Characteristic , to create a characteristic.

    Enter the following details:

    Field NameDescription
    NameThe name of the characteristic or choose AutoName option.
    TitleThe title of the characteristic.
    DescriptionThe description of the characteristic.
    CategoryThe category of the characteristic.
    Note: If a category is removed or modified from the Product Specifications Configuration page after the characteristic is evaluated on a part, the original category value is passed to the copied or revised part.
    PriorityThe priority of the characteristic.
    DimensionThe dimension of the characteristic. This field has Color-RGB, Color-HEXA, Color-CMYK, and Subjective options in the list.
    Display UnitThis field is active only if it is applicable to the dimension that you choose.
    Notes:
    • For Dimension as Color-RGB, Color-HEXA, Color-CMYK, and Subjectivity, you cannot edit the Display Unit.
    • For Dimension as Real or Integer, the Display Unit is a box.
    Valuation TypeSelect one of the following:
    • None
    • Simple Value: This is the default valuation type.
    • Multiple Value: This is shown only when String is selected for Dimension.
    Note: For Dimension as Color-RGB, Color-HEXA, Color-CMYK, and Subjectivity, you cannot edit the Valuation Type.
    ValueThis option is displayed if the Valuation type is Simple Value.
    Lower Target Minimal value of the characteristic.
    Lower Specification Limit The minimum required value that a particular characteristic must have.
    Note: This is not applicable for characteristics with Dimensions as String, Subjective, and Boolean.
    Lower Routine Release Limit The lower range value that a part has during manufacturing phase. If the value is below the specified routine release limit, a special permission is required from the concerned department.
    Upper Routine Release Limit The upper range value that a part has during manufacturing phase. If the value is above the specified routine release limit, a special permission is required from the concerned department.
    Upper Specification Limit The maximum required value that a particular characteristic should have.
    Note: This is not applicable for characteristics with Dimensions as String, Subjective, and Boolean.
    Upper Target Maximum value of the characteristic.
    Authorized ValuesThe range values for the characteristics. The values must be in odd count.

    For example: For Subjectivity dimension the values can be 3, 5, 7.

    This is not shown when you select Multiple Value for Valuation Type.

    Values Lets you add multiple values to the characteristic. You cannot add duplicate values.

    This is shown when you select Multiple Value for Valuation Type.

    Characteristics NotesThe notes for the characteristic.
    Measurement PrecisionSelect a measurement precision for the characteristic from the list menu.
    Missed Target ActionSelect the action to be taken when the test target is missed for the characteristic.
    Applies to In ProcessSelect one of the following to indicate if the characteristic is applicable to process formulas:
    • True
    • False
    Applies to BulkSelect one of the following to indicate if the characteristic is applicable to bulk processing:
    • True
    • False
    Applies to Final PackageSelect one of the following to indicate if the characteristic is applicable when final packaging is done:
    • True
    • False
    Overwrite on Child AllowedIndicates if you can overwrite a child object.

  4. Click Done.

A characteristic is created.
