About Variables

You can create variables to share information between the Experience components.

There are two types of variables, String and Filter, that you can use for different use cases.

Important: You can use the same variable in several data queries.

Variables to Populate the Data Query

You can create Filter variables to send filters to the Data Query. These are the context variables that you find in the Effects On click actions of several visualizations, in Table or Chart properties. For example, you can send a URI or a list of URIs to the data query.

You can create a String variable to encapsulate a user query and populate the data query with the user query value. If you define the variable in the data query, it is then able to display search results in your hit visualization. For example, these are the context variables that you find in the Data properties of the Search Field and List - Detail visualizations.

Variables for Interactions Between Visualizations

You can create variables to allow your visualizations to communicate with one another and refine data. For example, when you select a hit and want other visualizations to update their display according to that selection. You may want to map the Result List visualization to the Hit Details visualization. In that case, when you select a hit in the Result list, you get its details in the Hit Details visualization.

When you bind visualizations to the same data query, applying a filter impacts all these visualizations.
