About Promoting Objects

When you are promoting a structure that has a drawing as the root node, then the structure under the drawing is considered for the promotion according to IEF-DefaultVerticalView attribute in LCO or GCO.

Option	Description
As Built	This view considers the physically connected structure. It is used to expand all the objects that are connected at the time of check in. This view works within the same revision of all items in the given structure. Thus, it considers the latest iteration within the selected revision. Check in and modification by all users results in As-Built view.
Latest Revision	This view considers the latest revision for all the items in the given structure irrespective of the maturity state. This will work across revisions only.
Latest In Work Revision	This view considers all the objects in the latest In Work state.
Latest Frozen Revision	This view considers the latest frozen revision of the selected nodes and its underlying structure. If no revision in or beyond Frozen state is found for a particular node, then the node retrieved by applying the As-Built view to the parent node is displayed.
Latest Released Revision	This view considers the latest released revision of the selected nodes and its underlying structure. If no released revision is found for a particular node, then the node retrieved by applying the As-Built view to the parent node is displayed.

Promoting the structure is allowed if the lifecycle state of the connected design is ahead of the lifecycle state of the drawing.

When the design is at the root node and the Related Drawing view is applied, the drawing connected to the latest iteration is displayed.

If the drawings are not directly connected to the latest iteration of the design, then the latest drawings connected to the previous iterations of the design are displayed.

If different drawings are created for two different non-latest iterations of the design, then both will be shown in the Related Drawing view. For example, if Drawing D1 is created for Assembly iteration ---.0 and Drawing D2 is is created for Assembly iteration ---.1, then the Related Drawing view applied on latest Assembly revision --- displays both D1 and D2.

In above cases, promoting the structure is allowed if the connected design is in the same state or ahead of the drawing in the lifecycle state.

If you are using a customized environment where the components in an assembly can be governed by different policies that have different release states. To promote the structure, you need to first promote all children to the state prior to the last state for each policy, or to the same state as the parent object.

When promoting an assembly to the next state, it is possible that the parent and children objects may have different states.

For the each state, parent is promoted if and only if all of its first level children are in same state as that of the parent or in a higher state than parent. This rule will be applied for all the states.

If you are using a customized environment, components within an assembly can be governed by different policies, which have different release states. To promote the structure, you must first promote all children to the state prior to the last state for each policy, or to the same state as the parent object.

Some rules are followed by X-CAD Design Management during the promotion process.

• Views are applied recursively. The Document Iteration view (Lateral View) and Related Documents view (Vertical View) can be applied to the structure of the object when expanded. These views will be taken from user's local preference.

• If an object is included in a route, you cannot promote that object to the next state until the route is completed. The lifecycle may be designed to automatically promote an object at the route's completion.

  To promote the entire CAD structure using route, only the top-most parent item in the structure should be associated with route. After such a route is completed, the top-most parent item is promoted. This invokes a trigger in X-CAD Design Management that promotes the entire structure from bottom-up. Avoid associating multiple items of the same structure to a given Route.

  If a design requires an approval for promotion from a source state to a target state and if you associate a design in such source state to a route and complete the route, the design is not promoted as the approval is not provided.

  It is recommended that you approve the promotion before completing such a route. If a design is in its last state, it should not be added to route.

• You cannot promote a parent object unless all child objects have already been promoted to the next state. The promotion of parent will be possible when its children are at same or higher state than parent. Promotion of the family will be possible only if the instances are at a state higher than or equal to that of the Family.

• When promoting an assembly, child nodes at the same state are also promoted. For example, if a parent object and child objects are being promoted from Frozen to Released, only those child objects not already in the Released state are promoted. The promote operation does not search branches in the Released state any further, because by definition all the child objects in that branch must already be in the Released state.

• Any object can be promoted to next state, irrespective of its previous revision's state. For example, if --- and --A revisions of an object are in the Under Global Design state (possible only if Strict Versioning is off (NO)), it is possible to promote --A to next state that is Design Frozen.

When promoting a configuration or family, the promotion is always done in together mode.

In together mode, a family is promoted along with its associated instances that are in the same state.

The Together mode enables promotion of the family structure as a whole, avoiding individual selection of each item in the structure for promotion.

Mass promotion of X-CAD Design Management objects along with its children is done silently without any display of any page or dialog box.

You can mass promote X-CAD Design Management objects with its children from Non-X-CAD Design Management pages in the application. X-CAD Design Management objects added to CO / ECO as affected items can be promoted using Mass Promote command in Engineering BOM Management.

Promotions from the Object Summary Header page and non-X-CAD Design Management pages are considered as mass promote of objects.

Objects connected as Affected Items are expanded in object structure to get all the children connected to the object. Hence when the parent object is promoted, all its children are promoted even though they are not in the CO / ECO as affected items.

The promotion is applicable only from a state to its next state in its policy. For example, if a child that is in Design Frozen state and the parent in the Under Global Design state are added as Affected Items to CO, the mass promotion does not promote the parent and child to Design Released state. Also the order of the objects connected as Affected Items cannot be controlled by X-CAD Design Management for promotion.

In case of revision conflict, by default the latest object is not promoted and the promotion fails.

If user preference "Allow Promote Floating Drawing" is set to false, promote is not successful if the Drawing is out of Sync.

If you use mass promote functionality to promote an iteration object, the promotion is considered only for the iteration object. The iteration object cannot be promoted as it has only one state. This blocks the promotion of the revision object.

When a promote is processed on a structure containing External Reference Relationships, children connected with External Reference relationship are included in promote operation. Such nodes are included in promote operation even when value of attribute "Must in Structure" is false on the relationship.

To exclude such children with value of attribute "Must in Structure" as false on the External Reference relationship from the promote operation on the structure, the value of GCO attribute IEF-PromoteUnrequiredRef should be set to FALSE. This is a one time setting done by your app administrator in the GCO.

If the value of the attribute IEF-PromoteUnrequiredRef is set to FALSE in the GCO, the parent item in the structure can be promoted before the child item that is connected with External Reference relationship having attribute value for "Must in Structure" as false. Only those child items, with External Reference relationship having attribute value for "Must in Structure" as true will be considered in promote operation. Children with CAD SubComponent relationship having MustInStructure as false will be considered for promote operation as usual.

In some cases if the geometry in the design is shared across items of a structure, it is necessary to promote the child connected with External Reference relationship before the parent item. In this case, Must In Structure should be True.

If a node is connected to the parent with the CAD SubComponent relationship and also with External Reference relationship having attribute value for "Must in Structure" as false, then such node is also selected for promote.
