Promoting Objects

You can promote an object from one state to the next in its lifecycle. To promote an object in its lifecycle state, you have to meet a set of requirements.

For example, when you check a CAD drawing into an object that is in the Under Global Design state, you often want to promote the object to the Design Frozen state. If you have not checked in a file, the policy blocks the promote of the object.

Family and its associated instances will always be promoted with together mode.

Promotion of iterations is not supported.

In case of legacy or customized environments, if an object's policy permits auto promotion, then the object is automatically promoted each time all the requirements for a state are met. Otherwise, users with promote access can manually promote an object from its current state to the next.

Note:

The user interface of the promote dialog box is identical for the applet-free UI and the applet based UI.

Before you begin:
  • You must have promote authority.
  • The design object must meet the lifecycle requirements.
  • You must have access to the integration to which the object belongs.

Applying Signatures
  1. Select the object you want to promote.

You can select multiple objects as long as they belong to the same collaborative product.

  2. Optional: You can mass promote X-CAD Design Management objects added to CO / ECO as Affected Items from apps other than X-CAD Design Management, see Mass Promotion of Objects.
  3. Click Actions > Promote.

If you are using Internet Explorer 10 or 11, refer Known Limitations in Collaborative Apps to stop the display of security pop-ups.

  4. Expand the structure to the desired level using the Expand Levels option and select the parent node to select the child components.
The CAD object and any existing child objects in a tree structure appear.
  5. To view externally referenced objects, select Related Drawing from the Related Documents list.

    Notes:
    • If the Allow Promote Floating Drawing option is not selected in the Preferences page, you cannot promote a structure with a drawing that is out of sync, see Miscellaneous Preferences in Admin guide. If the drawing is out of sync, a message appears indicating that the structure has been modified and promoting may change the design. To promote, check out the structure with latest Iteration to get latest structure in cad tool.
    • For each object the status of the drawing is displayed with a color code, see Promote Dialog Box.
    • In case of AutoCAD drawings, "Out of Sync" drawing notification is displayed on the promote page for the structure, even if the drawing objects are not connected using the "Associated Drawing" relationship. This notification indicates that the AutoCAD drawing used while manufacturing, is out of sync with the child structure.

  6. To include a related document, select an option from the Related Documents list.

When you select an option, a red dot appears next to the Promote title. To update the list with your changes, click Refresh Selected or Refresh All. Click Rest to Default to restore the original settings.

For more information, see Promote Dialog Box.
  7. Select an option from the Document Iteration list.

When you select an option, a red dot appears next to the Promote title. To update the list with your changes, click Refresh Selected or Refresh All. Click Rest to Default to restore the original settings.

The selected Iteration of the design appears. For more information, see Promote Dialog Box.
  8. For each object, select the Iteration of the object you want to promote, see About Promoting Objects.

Note: All selected objects must be generated from the same collaborative product. If you see a Node not valid for selection message, that design cannot be promoted.

  9. Select the Select Children at same State check box.

If progressive loading option is selected in the local preferences, then the children in the structure are selected when you select the top node, even if you don't select the Select Children at same State check box.

Note: All the items in the family structure, which are at the same state as that of the selected item, are promoted at the same time even if you do not select the check box, as the family structure promotion happens in together mode.

  10. Click Submit.

In the applet-free UI: The progress bar does not appear. If all requirements are met, a success message appears. In the success message, when you click Ok, the Promote dialog box is closed along with the message. If you want to promote to the next state, you need to reopen the Promote dialog box.

If all the requirements are not met, an error message listing the errors for all objects that were selected for promotion appear. In the error message, when you click Ok or close the error message, the Promote dialog box is closed along with the message. Click to export the error messages to a comma-separated values spreadsheet that can be opened in Excel.

    Notes:
    • When you select multiple objects, child objects are promoted before the parent objects.
    • In together mode, the entire family is promoted along with its instances. You need to have access to all the items in the family to successfully promote the entire family structure.
