About the Map Editor

You use the map editor to define a hierarchy for your document. The map editor lets you open a saved map or create a new map. You can think of the map editor as the table of contents for the document.

Your document can contain several levels of topics. The map lets you expand and collapse the sublevels. You can use the map to add or remove topics, exclude topics from rendering, and define properties for topics. You can drag topics from one location to another within a map to change the order of the topics in the document.

The map editor shows in the upper right of the pane. You can click this icon to hide the map editor. Click View and select Document Map Outline to show a hidden map editor.

You can drag the right edge of the map editor to adjust its size.

You can only open one document map at a time. When you edit a document map, the app locks that map to all other users. If another user has the map locked, the app displays a message and shows a lock icon if you search for it. You can open the map in read-only mode, but you cannot make any changes. The document map also shows lock icons to indicate which topics are locked and by which users.

You can click any topic in the map. What happens depends on your access role:

  • Viewer: You can view the topic in read-only mode. You cannot make any changes.
  • Author and Leader: As long as you have access to the topic based on your repository membership, you have full editing access to the topic.

If you do not have access to the topic, a message displays and you cannot view the topic content.
