Setting Shell Properties

You can set the shell properties for a given solid functional set. Shell Properties assigns a wall thickness to an active body.

Before you begin: Open a 3D shape representation.

  1. In the Object Properties panel, click Shell Properties .
  2. From the Wall dirction list in the Shell Properties.x dialog box, select the wall direction.
If you specify Inside as the wall direction and 0mm as thickness, the shellable feature is generated on the outer side with positive volume and no core is removed.
Important: If you specify Outside as the wall direction and 0mm as thickness, the shellable feature is generated on the inner side with the negative volumes and the product disappears from the screen.
  3. In the Thickness box, specify the required wall thickness value.
  4. Select one or more faces to remove from the shelled volume.
Tip: If you select several features, the box displays the number of selected elements. To act on this selection, click to display the panel that allows you to:
    • View the selected elements and specify individual thickness values.
    • Remove any element.

Important: After a shellable volume is shelled, only features that have behaviors that function within internal volumes, such as ribs, can penetrate the shell (or internal) boundary. Thus, features such as boss and reinforcement cannot penetrate the shell because their behaviors are to add material volume to the outside of another material volume.
  5. From the Core Type list in the Core tab, select one of the following:
    • Interconnected core
    • Isolated core
    • Select core.

Note: In some specific cases, the app cannot create surfaces which do not have offset in the shell computation. An error message then appears informing you that the resulting geometry cannot be assembled. These errors are difficult to manage because they generally involve several shellable features and the shell properties.

  6. Click OK.
The properties you defined are applied.Shell Properties is added to the tree.
