Extracting 3D Spot Fasteners in a Drafting View

You can generate 2D spot symbols from a product containing 3D spot fasteners with or without associated generative view styles.

This task shows you how to:

Before you begin:
  • To allow the extraction of spot fasteners, you must refer to the Fst_Symbols drawing representation saved from the FstFastenerResource resource available in the Data Setup app.
  • You must import the Fst_Symbols drawing representation into the database.

    It is located according to the startup\components\FstDrawing path from CATIA run time view root directory (win_b64 for Windows, aix_a for IBM UNIX, irix_a for SGI UNIX, solaris_a for SUN Unix, hpux_a for HP UNIX).

  • Make sure the spot fasteners have a normal vector orientation.
    Note: The 2D spot fastener symbol is always visible in the drafting view (depending on the extraction parameters) even if there is a geometric element in front of it.

Extract in a Drafting View Without Associated GVS

You can extract 3D spot fasteners in a drafting view without an associated GVS.

  1. If you do not wish to create and use generative view styles, select Disable generative view style usage in Me > Preferences > App Preferences > 3D Modeling > Mechanical Systems > Drafting > Administration.
  2. Select Me > Preferences > App Preferences > 3D Modeling > Multi Discipline Engineering > Fastening > Drafting to specify the extract parameters that will be used to generate the 3D spot fasteners in the drawing view:
    • the Fixed Drawing Spot Size option cleared
    • the Angular Tolerance option set to 90deg
    • the Include View Reverse Direction option is selected
  3. Switch to the Drafting app: from the Compass, click 3D Modeling Apps and select Drafting.
  4. Click Front, Bottom and Right views in the Drawing Information tab to create a drawing in these views.
  5. Click Finish.

    The 2D spot fasteners are automatically generated in the drawing views according to the drafting extraction parameters specified in Me > Preferences > App Preferences > 3D Modeling > Multi Discipline Engineering > Fastening > Drafting. For more information, see Drafting

Extract in a Drafting View With Associated GVS

You can extract 3D spot fasteners in a drafting view with an associated GVS.

  • If the Extract Location is set to No, the 3D spot fasteners will not be generated in this view.
  • If the Extract Location is set to Yes and:
    • If the Angular Tolerance is specified (different from -1), the 3D spot fasteners will be generated in this drafting view according to the Extract parameters defined in the GVS.
    • If the Angular Tolerance is not specified (i.e. set to -1), the 3D spot fasteners will be generated in the drafting view according to the Extract parameters defined in Me > Preferences > App Preferences > 3D Modeling > Multi Discipline Engineering > Fastening > Drafting.

Let's take an example with the following parameters:

  • Fixed Drawing Spot Size is selected and set to 5mm
  • Angular Tolerance is set to 45deg
  • Include View Reverse Direction is cleared .

Now create three GVS as shown below:

  • DefaultGenerativeStyle with the following parameters:
    • spot fastener extraction parameters:
      • Extract Location is set to Yes
      • Angular tolerance is set to 90deg
      • Include view reverse direction flag is set to Yes.
    • spot fastener view dress-up parameters:
      • Technological Symbol color is visible
      • Additional Symbol 1 is visible, it is assigned to Robustness
      • Additional Symbol 2 is visible, it is assigned to Regulation
      • Additional Symbol 3 is visible, it is assigned to Finish
      • Additional Symbol 4 is not visible
  • FastenerNoExtractionGenerativeStyle with the following parameters:
    • Extract Location is set to No.
  • FastenerSettingsExtractGenerativeStyle with the following parameters:
    • Extract Location is set Yes
    • Angular tolerance is set to -1
    • Include view reverse direction flag is set to Yes.

  1. If you wish to create and use generative view styles, clear Disable generative view style usage in Me > Preferences > App Preferences > 3D Modeling > Mechanical Systems > Drafting > Administration.
  2. To switch to the Drafting app, from the Compass, click 3D Modeling Apps and select Drafting.
  3. Click Front, Bottom and Right views to create a drawing in these views.
  4. Click Finish.

    The 2D spot fasteners are automatically generated in the drawing views according to the drafting extraction parameters of the default DefaultGenerativeStyle GVS.



    According to the defined parameters, you can notice that:

    • reversed spots fasteners are generated as the Include view reverse direction was set to Yes in the default GVS.

    • all the spot fasteners are dimensioned according to the Fixed Drawing Spot Size set to 5mm in your preferences.

  5. Right-click Right view in the treeand select Properties.
  6. Replace the existing GVS (DefaultGenerativeStyle) by FastenerNoExtractionGenerativeStyle.
  7. Click Update .
    The Right view is updated according to the new specified GVS.

    You can see that no spot fastener has been extracted as in this GVS as the Extract Location parameter was set to No.

  8. Right-click Bottom view in the tree and select Properties.
  9. Replace the existing GVS (DefaultGenerativeStyle) by FastenerSettingsGenerativeStyle.
  10. Click Update .
    The Bottom view is updated according to the new specified GVS.

    You can see that spot fasteners have been extracted according to the Angular Tolerance and Include view reverse direction parameters specified in the Options, as through in this associated GVS, the Angular Tolerance was set to -1.
