Creating a Failure Mode

You can create a failure mode that is, the manner in which a component may fail to perform its intended function.

A failure mode:

  • Is always contained in a fallible reference pointing to a functional, logical, or physical reference.
  • Should be pointed by an event.

  1. From the architecture tree, select a functional, logical, or physical reference.
  2. From the Edit section of the action bar, click Create Failure Mode .

    Notes:
    • If no fallible reference points to the selected reference, this command will create one to contain the new failure mode.
    • If a fallible reference already points to the selected reference, it will contain the new failure mode. Its lifecycle must be editable.

  3. In the Create a Failure Mode for xxx dialog box:
    1. Enter a name
    2. Optional: Select Dependent system fault to create a DSF.

For more information about dependent system fault (DSF), see Working with a Dependent System Fault (DSF).

    3. Click Create to create the failure mode in the architecture tree.

Important: By default, the fallible reference is not visible in the architecture tree. To display the fallible reference, see Customizing Preferences.

To edit and instantiate this failure mode, see Defining a Fault Tree Analysis.
