About the Design Space

The design space identifies the regions of your model that can be modified during the shape or topology optimization.

Specifying Regions to Preserve

In a shape optimization, the design space is a subset of the model containing only selected regions and it can be modified by the optimization process. After you have defined the prescribed conditions (such as boundary conditions, loads, and manufacturing constraints), an optimization attempts to reach an optimal design by modifying the material definition of the elements in the design area. Elements outside the design area are removed from the analysis and play no part in the shape optimization.
