Lining up Dimensions (Free Space)

You can line up the following dimensions relative to a point in the free space:

  • Length dimensions

  • Distance dimensions

  • Radius dimensions

  • Diameter dimensions

  • Angle dimensions

In other words, you can organize dimensions into a system with an offset. The offset aligns the dimensions according to each other, based on the position of the smallest dimension.

Before you begin: In a drawing representation, create dimensions.

Specific information about the Line-up command
  1. Select the dimensions to be lined up.
Important: When selecting the dimensions, make sure that they belong to a single, coherent system (if you select dimensions which could form two different systems, you could get unexpected results).

Note that if none of the following conditions is satisfied, then Line-Up identifies more than one dimension systems out of the selected dimensions:

    • At least one of the extremity points of a dimension lies on the same side, as that of corresponding extremity point of the other dimensions.

However, note that, the identification of corresponding extremities of a dimension depends on the order of the selection of elements while creating the dimension.

    • The farthest extremity point of a dimension lies on the same side, as that of the farthest extremity point of the other dimensions.

  2. Right-click and select Line-up.
  3. Click anywhere in the drawing.

  4. In the Line Up dialog box, enter the required value for the offset to reference.
  5. Enter the required value for the offset between dimensions.
Important: Two fields are available for both these options:
    • The first field is dedicated to length, distance and angle dimensions. It is defined with the Paper Unit (defined in Me > Preferences > App Preferences > 3D Modeling > Mechanical Systems > Drafting > General expander. For more information, see General.
    • The second field (grayed out in our example) is dedicated to radius and diameter dimensions.

Whether a field is active depends on the type of dimension selected.

  6. Select Align stacked dimension values to align all the values of a group of stacked dimensions on the value of the smallest dimension of the group.
Note: In the case of cumulated dimensions, Align cumulated dimension values align all the values of a group of cumulated dimensions on the value of the smallest dimension of the group.
  7. Optional: Select Automatically add a funnel to display a funnel automatically whenever the dimension value cannot be displayed correctly without one.
  8. Click the Only organize into systems option: neither the smallest dimension of each system nor dimensions that cannot be organized into systems will be moved.
  9. Click OK to validate.
The dimensions are now aligned. The position of the smallest system dimension is not modified. The stacked dimensions are aligned according to the smallest dimension.

Important: When you click in the drawing, the linear offset between the smallest dimension and the reference is automatically set to 0 value. The space between two dimensions is the space defined in the Preferences dialog box ( Me > Preferences > App Preferences > 3D Modeling > Mechanical Systems > Drafting > Dimension expander, under Line Up).
