Duplicating a Part

You can duplicate an existing part and then modify the options and attributes of the duplicate as required.

Required Access Roles:

  • Baseline: Author or Leader

Duplicating automatically populates all options and attributes for the new part with the values from the existing part. Any value can be changed during the process. For example, if you have an existing Part A and want to create a Part B that is the same except for estimated and target costs, you can duplicate Part A and replace only the values for Estimated Cost and Target Cost in Part B. Duplicating does not validate the structure. For example, certain relationships may not be valid in the part's In Work state (the state in which production parts are created). BOM Effectivity dates may be outdated.

Note: Configured parts cannot be duplicated.

Rules for duplicating change-required parts:

  • The duplicate is change-required if the source part is change-required.
  • A duplicate part is not required to be under change management even if the part being duplicated is. However, if the existing part is under change management, the duplicate is set to be under change management by default. To remove change management from the duplicate, deselect Enable Change Required when you create the duplicate.
  • You can apply a work under change action while you create the duplicate or after you create it.

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Click > Engineering > Part > Duplicate Part.
    • Click the Duplicate Part icon on the page toolbar of any part Properties page.

Only users with access for duplicating parts will see this link.

  2. Complete these fields:
    Field Description
Clone Based On If the part name is not already filled in, click to search for and select the part you want to duplicate.
Include Related Data Optionally, select items to include in the new part.

The All check box allows you to include in the new part the entire structure of data related to the existing part, or to clear all options already selected. Alternatively, you can select one or more items of related data to include.

If you select one or more items, the new part is created with a structure that includes the selected related data. For example, if the existing part you are duplicating has reference documents or specifications defined for it, the same reference documents and specifications will be connected to the new part.

Note: You must select a Work Under CA if the original part is under change management. If the original part is not under change management, a work under CA for the duplicate is optional.

If you do not select any related data, the new part is created with no structure.

Duplicating does not validate the structure. For example, certain relationships may not be valid in the part's In Work state (the state in which production parts are created). BOM Effectivity dates may be outdated.

Note: To enable the duplicated part BOM to synchronize with CATIA or the Native app, select the Specifications check box. See Synchronization With ENOVIA Product Finder.

Type Part revision type or subtype
Name Part names can be generated automatically by the system, or you can enter a new part name.

Type a unique part name into the Name box or click Autoname and select an option from the Autoname Series list.

If a part family is selected, the Name field is disabled and the part name is generated based on the requirements of the part family.

    Phase Either Development or Production.
Options- Enable Change Required Select whether to apply change-required. This option is set if the part to be duplicated is under change management.

After creating the duplicate you can change its change management properties. In the Properties tab, change the Change Required field from "Disabled" to "Enabled; Any Change".

Options- Design Collaboration Select whether this part will be synchronized to CATIA or the Native app.
Work Under Change Select the work under change action (CA) that will track changes to the duplicate part. This field is required if you select Enable Change Required. The duplicate part is listed under "Realized Changes" when you open the CA that you select.
Part Family If the base part is not classified (does not belong to a part family), you can classify the duplicate. Click to search for a part family to be associated with the part duplicate for classification purposes or for part number generation. The duplicate name is then generated from the part family (if AutoName generator is enabled on the part family). If the base part is classified, this field is disabled and the duplicate will have the same classification.
Note: If a part family is already assigned to the part to be duplicated, the duplicate is assigned the same part family.
Number of Parts Type the number of parts you want to create. The maximum allowed value is 10. When creating multiple parts at the same time, you must either select an active part family that has the Name Generator attribute set to "On," or you must use AutoName and select an AutoName Series.
  3. Click OK.

Once the duplicate is created, the duplicate opens with the Properties tab selected. You can edit the properties as required. See Editing Part Properties.

If you are creating multiple parts at the same time, the Create Parts: Edit window opens after you click OK on the Duplicate Part page. For details, see Editing Multiple Parts.
